Listowel Emmets blow Killimer away in blustery Quilty

Munster Club JFC semi-final: Listowel Emmets 5-17 Killimer 2-2

This provincial semi-final was put back by 15 minutes because of a car breakdown on the ferry from Tarbert, but that it just delayed the inevitable was hammered home by a ruthless Listowel team that never once took the foot off the accelerator.

So it was at the blustery West Clare venue as Kerry’s latest standard-bearers at junior level never had to break a sweat to set up a Munster final date against a Kilmurry side that Fossa beat by 11 points in last year’s final.

They had 24 points to spare here and couldn’t have had an easier day out against the Banner representatives that proved conclusively how much North Kerry and West Clare are divided in terms of football quality, as they are by the Shannon Estuary.

By half-time the Emmets supporters might well have been thinking of catching the early ferry home, secure in the knowledge that the 3-7 to 1-0 lead was more than enough as the Marc Ó Sé coached side exposed Killimer’s tactic of trying to keep-ball from the earliest minutes, instead of trying to play football.

JJ Grimes’ goal from a penalty after 11 minutes, which was awarded after Cormac Mulvihill was upended in the large square by Declan Pyne, was the breakthrough score and when it was followed four minutes later by another from David Keane for a 2-2 to no score lead, the huge gulf in class was already evident and was only going to get bigger.

It was similar in the closing eight minutes of the half when Listowel roused themselves once more in response to Colm Pyne’s breakaway goal after 18 minutes by hitting 1-5 without replay for a 13-point interval lead.

Top scorer David Keane got his second goal on 30 minutes before largely passing the baton to a variety of others in the second half as the Emmets cut through the porous defence at will, despite facing into the elements.

In all, they had 11 different scorers as they cantered into a first-ever provincial final, with substitutes Adam O’Rourke and Dara Lynch grabbing the goals on 48 and 58 minutes that came exactly either side of a fine individual goal by Killimer’s left-half-back Paul Browne.

That strike may have amounted to little consolation for Killimer, but at least they kept trying in that second half when others might have thrown in the towel altogether.
