SFC Round 3A: Sligo progress after strong finish

GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship Round 3A: Sligo 0-12 Limerick 0-10

Report from the GAA.ie web site

Sligo worked their way into the last 12 of the All-Ireland championship following a spirited victory over Limerick at Markievicz Park. The sides were level at half-time, but two points in the last two minutes from Stephen Coen and Shane McManus saw the Yeats men over the line. Either Cork or the losers of the Connacht final await in the next round for Pat Flanagan’s side, who will be buoyed by wins over Wicklow and John Brudair’s side.

But Sligo could have made it a lot easier on themselves, and a poor day kicking scores means there is plenty to work on ahead of the next round on July 26th. However, the victors were extremely solid at the back, and only a couple of misplaced passes out of defence denied them the chance to keep Limerick to below the ten-point mark.

The first-half ended at 0-6 each, but Sligo deserved to lead well at the break, as Ian Ryan’s late brace punished some poor shooting from Sligo. Conditions nosedived after the restart as both side found handling difficult, but a strong surge midway through the half from the home side looked to have been enough as Stephen Coen and Adrian Marren found the target.

Ger Collins responded for Limerick, before James Kilcullen’s point put daylight between the sides with ten minutes remaining. However Eoin Hanrahan and Michael Brosnan squared matters with just four minutes remaining, which set up Coen and McManus to prove Sligo’s saviours in the final moments.
