AIB Munster Club JFC Final: Gritty Kilmurry prevail
Kilmurry 1-10 Firies 0-9
Report By John O’Dowd at Mick Neville Park for GAA.ie
Showing a ravenous hunger for success, coupled with a never-say-die attitude, 13-man Kilmurry produced the most passionate of displays to deservedly beat a fancied Firies outfit in the Munster club JFC Final played in a bitterly cold Mick Neville Park in Rathkeale.
Having suffered harrowing defeats to both Fossa and Listowel Emmets in the previous two junior deciders, this was undoubtedly third time lucky for the Muskerry side. From first whistle to last, they never took a backward step in their crusade to set the record straight.
Against the elements in the opening half, Kilmurry dug in commendably, resolute and doggedly stoic at the back, with the flair of Liam Wall, and the bustling physique of John O’Mullane, allowing them to find a nice balance in attack.
Indeed, Wall’s sixth minute goal, the only green flag of the contest, turned out to be the game’s crucial score. Lloyd Aisling’s darting run up the left wing, and O’Mullane’s power and directness, opened up the Firies’ defence, and the wing-forward made no mistake with a flick at the back post.
Although rocked by the goal concession, Firies then enjoyed their only real purple patch. Taking control of breaking ball, and with James Horgan and Darragh Brosnan slotting over some exquisite points, five on the trot had Firies two clear after 21 minutes (0-6 to 1-1).
Kilmurry, driven on by the O’Mullane and Aisling siblings, and with Wall always showing his class, responded positively themselves to the Firies’ blitzkrieg. By the half-time interval, it was the Cork kingpins who had edged into the ascendancy (1-5 to 0-7).
With the wind now to their backs on the resumption, and with reality hitting home that they were really in serious contention for the title, Kilmurry attacked the second half with great gusto. Four unanswered points of their own gave them a five-point three-quarter cushion (1-9 to 0-7).
Full-forward Mike Daly finally opened Firies’ second half account in the 46th minute with one of their only two points of the second half, but with Wall continuing to prompt and probe in attack, Kilmurry remained clearly the more purposeful outfit.
In a tetchy closing quarter Firies lost Padraig de Brún for 10 minutes in the sin-bin, before the winners had both midfielders sent off – James O’Mullane (on a second yellow) and Kyle Kelleher (a straight red).
None of that could spoil Kilmurry’s evening, however. Firies tried their best to engineer a potentially match-saving goal near the finish, but it never looked likely to happen. The Muskerry marvels held on with more than a bit to spare, and now advance to the All-Ireland semi-final in January.
