AIB Munster IFC Final: Stacks cruise to victory

Austin Stacks 7-7 Aherlow 0-2

Report By Stephen Barry at Mallow for GAA.ie

A second-half hat-trick from Cian Purcell saw seven-goal Austin Stacks run out convincing AIB Munster Club IFC winners over Aherlow.

The Kerry champions have won 16 of the last 18 trophies at this grade and Stacks never looked like being beaten.

Playing with the gale, they held Aherlow scoreless for a 1-5 to nil half-time lead. With the Tipperary champions reduced to 14 men, they racked up six goals in the second half in front of 1,129 fans at Mallow.

Stacks were without injured Kerry defender Dylan Casey, but began with the wind and rarely allowed Aherlow to escape their half.

The only first-half shot they allowed was a ninth-minute Barry Grogan free from the 45 which drifted wide.

Stacks won the first five Aherlow kick-outs but didn’t press home that advantage. They had 12 wides in the first half and a Paddy Lane free from the 14-metre line was blown onto the post. Some confusion surrounded another Lane attempt which was flagged as a point but overturned by the referee.

Between the misses, they had points from Donagh McKivergan and Lane frees, corner-back Colin Griffin, and Purcell’s long-range effort.

Stacks carved Aherlow apart for their first goal chance in the 22nd minute but Daniel Kirby’s shot was blocked by Gary Quirke. Play was brought back for a free which McKivergan converted before being called ashore.

Five points appeared an insubstantial lead given the conditions but a 30th-minute goal gave Stacks a better cushion as Joe O’Connor’s give-and-go created the space for Lane to blast home.

Any hopes Aherlow had of making inroads were hampered in the aftermath of the goal as Cathal Dillon received a second yellow card.

Stacks went chasing goals in the second half. Jack Whelton saved from Darragh O’Brien before O’Connor’s follow-up hit the post inside a minute of the restart.

In the 35th minute, O’Connor sliced through with another give-and-go. Daniel Kirby provided the return pass for the inter-county midfielder to find the net.

Aherlow got their opening point in the 39th minute when Grogan curled over a free off the ground.

Purcell had two goals in five minutes; the first was a brilliant individual effort before a tap-in after Shane O’Callaghan’s shot was taken off the line.

Substitutes accounted for two further goals as Seán Quilter capitalised on a handling error and O’Callaghan bundled home after Jordan Kissane was denied by Whelton.

After a Mark Russell point at the other end, Purcell wrapped up his hat trick in the second minute of stoppages.
