The Chief Executives of Foras na Gaeilge and Munster GAA met today (Tuesday June 27th) to cement a partnership project between the two organisations.
Foras na Gaeilge is making a significant investment of €120,000 in Munster GAA over a period of three years to strengthen the use of Irish.
The development project will focus on the target audiences recognised by Foras na Gaeilge – the school communities, community activities and youth work. It aims to condense and maintain the structures long established for the promotion of Irish in Munster and to improve, develop and promote the use of Irish through designated opportunities among the public.
A particular focus will be providing Irish language training opportunities and developing opportunities for use for speaking Irish in the clubs and at major and regional matches. An opportunity will be given to staff and committee members of Munster GAA to learn and use Irish in their roles and GAA members in the province to learn and use Irish daily.
These steps will strengthen Irish from day to day in GAA Munster Council communications and activities, and in the delivery of coaching and development facilities. More effective communications and relations will be created with Gaeltacht clubs and communities and the Munster Cultural Committee will be supported in the promotion of Irish.
To implement these developments, Aedín Ní Bhriain has been appointed as Irish language development officer by Munster GAA from now until March 2026.
Ger Ryan, Munster GAA Chairperson, said, “we are delighted to partner with Foras na Gaeilge on this initiative, which we hope will be a huge boost for the promotion of the Irish Language in GAA units across Munster. We are also delighted to welcome Aedín Ní Bhriain on board. Aedín brings a huge level of experience in promoting the Irish language to Munster GAA, and I would encourage all of our units to avail of this experience and to get active in promoting the Irish language.”
Foras na Gaeilge Chief Executive Seán Ó Coinn said, “Foras na Gaeilge started a similar partnership project for the first time with Ulster GAA in 2018. Significant and longterm outcomes resulted from the partnership between 2018 and 2022 when a comprehensive teaching and training programme for clubs, trainers and officers was developed. Since there are 475 clubs in Munster, and more than 400,000 people attend GAA games in Munster each year, we have a valuable opportunity to strengthen Irish at the heart of the community, in the parishes and towns of Munster through this project.”

Tús curtha le comhpháirtíocht stairiúil idir Foras na Gaeilge agus CLG na Mumhan
Bhuail Príomhfheidhmeannaigh Fhoras na Gaeilge agus CLG na Mumhan le chéile inniu le tionscadal comhpháirtíochta idir an dá eagraíocht a dhaingniú. Tá infheistíocht shuntasach dar luach €120,000 á déanamh ag Foras na Gaeilge in CLG na Mumhan thar thréimhse trí bliana ar mhaithe le húsáid na Gaeilge a neartú.
Díreoidh an tionscadal forbartha ar na spriocghrúpaí atá aitheanta ag Foras na Gaeilge – na scoilphobail, imeachtaí pobail agus obair óige. Tá sé mar sprioc aige comhdhlúthú agus buanú a dhéanamh ar na struchtúir atá fadbhunaithe do chur chun cinn na Gaeilge i gCúige Mumhan agus úsáid na Gaeilge a fheabhsú, a fhorbairt agus a chur chun cinn trí dheiseanna sainithe i measc an phobail.
Díreofar go sonrach ar dheiseanna oiliúna Gaeilge a chur ar fáil agus deiseanna úsáidte do labhairt na Gaeilge sna clubanna agus ag na cluichí móra agus réigiúnda a fhorbairt. Tabharfar deis d’fhoireann agus do bhaill choistí CLG na Mumhan an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim agus a úsáid sna róil atá acu agus do bhaill an CLG sa chúige an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim agus a úsáid go laethúil.
Neartóidh na céimeanna seo úsáid na Gaeilge ó lá go lá i gcumarsáid agus imeachtaí Chomhairle CLG na Mumhan, agus i seachadadh áiseanna cóitseála agus forbartha. Cruthófar cumarsáid agus caidreamh níos éifeachtaí le clubanna agus muintir na Gaeltachta agus tacófar le Coiste Cultúrtha na Mumhan i gcur chun cinn na Gaeilge.
Leis na forbairtí seo a chur i bhfeidhm, tá Aedín Ní Bhriain ceaptha mar oifigeach forbartha Gaeilge ag CLG na Mumhan as seo go dtí Márta 2026.
Dúirt Ger Ryan, Cathaoirleach CLG na Mumhan, “Tá lúcháir orainn a bheith i gcomhpháirt le Foras na Gaeilge sa tionscnamh seo, a chuirfidh go mór, tá súil againn, le cur chun cinn na Gaeilge in aonaid CLG ar fud na Mumhan. Tá lúcháir orainn freisin fáilte a chur roimh Aedín Ní Bhriain teacht ar bord. Tugann Aedín léi chuig CLG na Mumhan an-taithí go deo ag cur chun cinn na Gaeilge, agus molaim dár n-aonaid go léir tairbhe a bhaint as an taithí seo agus a bheith gníomhach maidir le cur chun cinn na Gaeilge.”
Arsa Príomhfheidhmeannach Fhoras na Gaeilge Seán Ó Coinn, “Chuir Foras na Gaeilge tús le tionscadal comhpháirtíochta den chineál seo den chéad uair le CLG Uladh in 2018. D’eascair torthaí suntasacha agus fadtéarmacha ón chomhpháirtíocht idir 2018 agus 2022 nuair a forbraíodh clár cuimsitheach teagaisc agus oiliúna do chlubanna, traenálaithe agus oifigigh araon. Ó tharla go bhfuil 475 chlub i gCúige Mumhan agus go bhfreastalaíonn breis agus 400,000 duine ar chluichí an CLG sa Mumhain gach bliain, tá deis luachmhar againn an Ghaeilge a neartú i gcroílár an phobail, i bparóistí agus i mbailte na Mumhan tríd an tionscadal seo.”
