SHC Quarter-Final: Tipperary too good for Dublin
GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship Quarter-Final: Tipperary 2-23 Dublin 0-16
Report from GAA.ie
Tipperary advanced to an All-Ireland semi-final meeting with arch rivals Cork after seeing off the disappointing challenge from Dublin at Semple Stadium in Thurles to ease their way to a 2-23 to 0-16 victory. It turned out to be a one-sided encounter with Tipperary opening up an interval lead of 0-15 to 0-8 and they wrapped it up in the second-half with John O’Dwyer firing home two goals for Eamon O’Shea’s men.
Dublin only led once in the game and that was when Danny Sutcliffe hit the opening score in the first minute. Lar Corbett got Tipperary moving with two sublime points in the opening five minutes with his only two scores of the game, but by the interval all Tipperary’s forwards had found their range and the game was slipping away from Dublin.
Seamus Callanan, who produced another superb display, put Tipp ahead by two goals when he pointed a ’65’ after 22 minutes to make it 0-10 to 0-4 before Dublin rallied with points from Alan McCrabbe and Johnny McCaffrey. But Tipperary finished the half with a flourish with John O’Dwyer, Noel McGrath and Gearóid Ryan finding their range to leave them seven points up at the break.
Dublin, now with the wind, needed a strong start to the second-half but it was Tipp who got it when Ryan pointed. McCrabbe pulled back a free for Dublin and after a brace from Callanan which left Tipp nine to the good, Anthony Daly’s men hit their best spell with a couple of points from Paul Ryan. But he had a penalty saved by Brendan Maher, and while Conal Keaney pointed the rebound to reduce the margin to six after 50 minutes, the game ended as a contest when James Woodlock and Callanan combined to set up O’Dwyer for his first goal.
Both sides emptied their benches at that stage but Tipp kept pulling further ahead and O’Dywer got his second goal after 64 minutes when an effort from Patrick Maher was saved by Alan Nolan but the rebound fell kindly for him and he sealed a facile win which has left Daly pondering his Dublin future.
“I’m a good while there now. I don’t know. We would have to give it long, hard thought. I suppose everyone involved in that dressing-room will be thinking about that,” said the Dublin manager afterwards. “We won’t make decisions like that now. We’ll take a few weeks now to clear the head and think about things and evaluate the situation.”
