Fermanagh defeated Limerick by 0-18 to 1-6 in round 5 of the Allianz Football League Division 3 on Sunday March 16th at Newcastle West.
Nine point loss for Limerick footballers against Fermanagh
By Jerome O’Connell for the Limerick Leader newspaper
The Limerick footballers suffered another big defeat this Sunday in Division 3 of the National Football League. The final score in Newcastle West was Limerick 1-6 Fermanagh 0-18.
The wins leaves Limerick on four points in a congested league table with games against Cavan and Offaly to come in the bid to ensure survival in the league. Fermanagh set the ball rolling from the opening minutes with a succession of attacks. Ryan Jones had two superb points to help them towards a 0-6 to 0-0 lead after 14-minutes.
The first Limerick score of the game came in the 15th minute when midfielder Tom Lee pointed. Then in the 19th minute an Eoin Hanrahan shot went all the way to the net with Paudie Browne blocking the view of the goalkeeper as he jumped on the edge of the square.
But it failed to kick-start the home side with Eoin Donnelly and Richard O’Callaghan kicking Fermanagh points to put them 0-9 to 1-1 ahead entering the final 10-minutes of the half. Free-taker Tomas Corrigan extended the Fermanagh before Ian Ryan had the final score of the half with a free to leave it 0-13 to 1-1 after a most disappointing opening half for Limerick.
In the second half Limerick had to wait until the final minute to get a score from play – Eoin Hanrahan. Indeed Limerick were to score just four points in the half as the Northerners kept Limerick at bay with ease. Peter McGrath’s men had match winners in Tomas Corrigan (0-10) and Ryan Jones (0-3).
