Tipperary overturned a seven-point deficit against Kerry in yesterday’s Gaelic Grounds final to retain their Electric Ireland Munster MFC crown. The All-Ireland champions were up against it approaching half-time as the Kingdom opened up a 1-9 to 0-5 advantage, before Tipp cut the gap to five at the break. But as manager David Power pointed out, Tipp have been in worse positions before, most notably when they trailed by 11 points against Kerry in last year’s provincial semi-final before coming from the dead to win.

It’s the first time that Tipp have achieved back-to-back provincial titles in this grade since 1935 — and also the first time Kerry have lost two Munster MFC matches in the same season — both against Tipp. The times they are a-changin’. Bullish Kingdom boss Mickey Ned O’Sullivan insisted, however, Kerry are “reeling in” Tipperary and is optimistic about their All-Ireland quarter-finals against Mayo or Sligo. Tipp, meanwhile, march on to a last-eight showdown with the runners-up from the West — and few would back against them. Ultimately, it was a scoring run of 2-6 without reply that sealed victory yesterday.

Having nabbed the final two points of the first half, they opened up with a run of 2-4 as Kerry went from the 29th to 44th minutes without a score. Ian Fahey signalled Tipp’s intent with a point 11 seconds after half-time before Colman Kennedy fisted home a brilliant 32nd minute goal. Their second goal was scored by Tom Kirwan in the 43rd minute as the Ardfinnan corner forward finished a neat move instigated by captain Dylan Fitzelle and taken on by the industrious Greg Henry. Tipp were now 2-11 to 1-9 clear but Kerry cut the gap back to just two points in the final minute.

The champions also had goalkeeper Evan Comerford to thank for a brilliant save as Kerry’s best forward Niall Sheehy threatened to score his second goal. Sheehy finished with 1-4 and his 16th minute goal was a superb soccer-style effort from 18m following an error from Tipp full-back James Feehan. Tipp went close three minutes later when Philip Quirke hit a shot off the post. Ultimately, it was Tipp’s greater levels of intensity that extricated them from a tricky situation.

“They were always going to come back at us,” said Mickey Ned. “Their physical strength across the middle was the deciding factor. A lot of our lads are very young and they didn’t have the physique. They blew us out of it around the middle. We just couldn’t handle it but we’re getting closer. “They deserved to win but we hope to [have another go at them]. We’re reeling them in slowly.”

Power, who has worked wonders during his time in charge, said: “In the second half, we played really well. It was very slow in the first half but we kept in there. We were unfortunate in one way but then Kerry had chances as well. “But the second half was just awesome — they played very well. They know themselves after coming down off this that they can play a lot better. “Kerry were very good but we have proven now that we are the best minor team in Munster over the last, I don’t know how many years. To do two in a row is an amazing achievement as well. Beating Kerry away, Cork in Cork and here today, beating Kerry — it’s just fantastic.”

Tipperary minors retain Munster title

Tipperary retained their Munster Minor Football Championship crown at the Gaelic Grounds this afternoon with a hard-fought 2-14 to 1-14 victory against Kerry in an entertaining final. David Power’s Premier County, who are the reigning All-Ireland champions, came from seven points down in the first half to ensure that Tipp claimed back-to-back Munster minor crowns for the first time since 1935. Tipp trailed by 0-07 to 1-09 at half-time but second half goals from corner-forwards Colman Kennedy and Tom Kirwan secured a seventh title at this grade for the champions.

Tipp trailed by seven points at one stage in the first half but showed the composure of champions to win a thrilling encounter and claim a seventh provincial minor football crown for the Premier County. It was a historic win for the Premier County as they secured consecutive provincial titles for the first time since 1935 – and they had to do it the hard way against Mickey Ned O’Sullivan’s Kerry. This victory marked Tipp’s second over Kerry in this year’s Championship, following a first round win at Austin Stack Park in Tralee last April.

Tipp came roaring out of the blocks in the second half and were five points clear 13 minutes after the restart. Tipp found themselves seven points down – 0-05 to 1-07 – when Jack Savage pointed a 29th minute free for Kerry but the Kingdom would not score again until the 44th minute. In that time, Tipp would embark on a sizzling scoring spree, hitting 2-06 without reply as corner forwards Kennedy and Kirwan netted early second half goals.

Tipp signalled their second half intentions early as midfielder Ian Fahey, switched from midfield to centre forward, kicked the opening score with just 11seconds on the clock. And manager Power’s switches worked a treat as Philip Quirke, who started at full-forward, swapped with midfielder Steven O’Brien. Tipp gained a firm stranglehold around the middle third of the field and this dominance provided the platform for victory. Kerry did well in the first half, however, with Savage in good form from frees, while Niall Sheehy was a menace at full-forward. And the Kingdom struck for the game’s opening goal in the 16th minute as Sheehy took advantage of a James Feehan error to goal brilliantly soccer-style from 18 metres.

But Tipp never looked out of contention and were unlucky not to net themselves in the 19th minute when Quirke struck the butt of the Kerry upright after taking a pass from marauding wing-back Bill Maher. Ultimately, it was Tipp’s greater physicality, experience and craft that would see them through. They will now meet the beaten Connacht finalists in the All-Ireland quarter-finals, while Kerry will look to regroup for the last eight of the All-Ireland series, against the champions from the west.

Munster Minor Football Cup

The Tadhg Crowley Cup was presented by Munster Council in 1990 to commemorate late Munster Council Treasurer. Tadhg was elected as Munster Council Treasurer in 1968 and served until his death in December 1989. A teacher by profession, he also served as Kerry County Board Secretary from 1955 until 1970. Tadhg was recognized as a specialist in organizing and handling styles and gates at Munster Championship games.

In the Minor Football All Ireland Roll of Honour, Kerry top the charts with 11 titles while Cork are tied for second with Dublin with 10 titles. Clare won the first All-Ireland Minor Football title in 1929 while Tipperary’s two All-Ireland successes at this grade came in 1934 and 2011. Between them Munster counties have accounted for 24 All-Ireland Minor Football titles, ahead of Leinster and Ulster (20 titles each) and Connacht (17 titles).
