The 2014/2015 Dr. Harty Cup resumed this week with eight games in Round 2.

Thurles CBS and the West Limerick Colleges shared the spoils

Thurles CBS and the West Limerick Colleges shared the spoils in an entertaining Harty cup battle hosted in Claughaun yesterday. The Thurles side took an early lead with points from Niall Heffernan and Brendan Kelly. In the 10th minute, Brendan Kelly from Thurles found the back of the Limerick side’s net to stretch their lead to 1-3 to 0-2. The West Limerick side started to settle into the game with Seamus Flanagan spearheading their attack scoring from placed balls and also contributing from play. At half time the Thurles side lead by 1-6 to 0-8.

Early In the second half, the Limerick side began to ask questions of the Thurles defence by running at them and none more so than Seamus Flanagan who was lined out at centre forward for the Limerick side. Seamus struck with a goal in the 40th minute after a marvellous individual run to put his side 1-9 to 1-7 ahead. Having finished the ball to the Thurles net, Seamus suffered an injury and had to retire from the play which was clearly a big loss to the amalgamated side. Thurles stayed in contention with some well taken scores from frees by Niall Heffernan. In the 50th minute, the Limerick side stuck for their second goal and were now taking a real foothold in the game with the score line reading 2-9 to 1-9. The Thurles side hit some bad wides and it seemed like the writing was on the wall for them until they strung a brace of points together to draw the game level in the 64th minute. Thurles’s free taker Niall Heffernan then slotted two fantastic long range efforts, followed by a point from Robbie Long which looked to put Thurles in a commanding position with seconds remaining on the clock. The West Limerick side were awarded a free on the 21 yard line, which was to be the last puck of the game in the 68th minute. Cian Magner Flynn had no choice but to go for goal and to the delight of the West Limerick backroom staff he duly obliged by sending the ball to the back of the Thurles net leaving the sides all square when referee Damien Fox called a halt to the day’s proceedings.

Each team will take a point from the game and the result now throws group 1 wide open with Thurles CBS on 3 points, Ard Scoil Ris on 2 points, Blackwater CS on 2 points, West Limerick Colleges on 1 point and St Flannans still to get off the mark.

Blackwater CS 2-22 St Flannans College 0-12

Blackwater CS ease to victory over St Flannans College

Tom Barron’s goal after two minutes for Blackwater opened the scoring in this game and from there on there was only going to be one winner. Shane Bennett added three points, two from placed balls before Flannans corner forward Aidan Kennedy opened his sides account. The Waterford school led 1-9 to 0-4 at half time. Colm Roche who was excellent throughout put the game beyond doubt with a goal in the 52nd minute. His contribution of 1-10 with 1-7 from play was the real difference between the teams. Flannans fought bravely and in free taker and full forward Sean Kennedy who scored five points from placed balls they had a reliable score getter. Blackwater CS face Thurles CBS next in a months’ time and with both schools having had comfortable wins against the Clare school it should be a close contest. Blackwater had good performers in man of the match Colm Roche, Tom Barron and Jordan Henley while Flannans were well served by captain Brian Cahill and brothers Sean and Aidan Kennedy substitute Adam Cassidy also made a big impact.

Castletroy College 3-9 DLS Waterford 1-9

Castletroy College withstood a gallant De La Salle Waterford comeback to secure a six point victory at Cahir on Wednesday. The first score of the game arrived in the 3rd minute when De La Salle scrambled a goal. The teams shared the next four scores before Castletroy drew level in the tenth minute courtesy of a Barry Nash goal. The Castletroy defence were now well on top, holding De La Salle scoreless for the rest of the first half as the conditions worsened due to the heavy rain. Castletroy gradually stretched their lead out to four points before an Aaron Kennedy goal in the 27th minute gave the Limerick school a 2-6 to 1-2 interval lead.

De La Salle began the second half in much more determined fashion, hurling with a directness missing in the first half. After opening the scoring with a quick point from play, the Waterford College went on to score the next four points to leave just two between the sides with 20 minutes remaining. Castletroy finally opened their second half account in the 44th minute with a pointed free to stem the tide. Despite the heavy conditions, both sides now threw everything in to the battle for scores in what was a physical but fair contest.

The game was decided in the 51st minute when Castletroy’s Andrew la Touche Cosgrave took on the DLS defence and finished to the net to put his team five points in front. De La Salle tried valiantly to score a goal to get them back in to the game in the closing stages but despite their best efforts, the Castletroy defence held firm to secure a six point win at the final whistle.

Gaelcholaiste Mhuire AG 2-14 St Colmans 0-7

Gaelcholáiste Mhuire overcame St Colmans in a bruising encounter that saw The AG pull away in the final ten minutes to secure two valuable points. Leading by 1-8 to 0-4 at half time, the AG withstood a tremendous Colmans onslaught early in the second half. A goal with ten minutes to go gave the AG a cushion that proved too much for Colmans to claw back.

Nenagh CBS 1-13 Dungarvan CBS 1-12

Nenagh CBS led for the first time with the last puck of the game thanks to a Keith Nealon free. Nenagh trailed 9 points to 7 at half time having trailed 5-0 early on. Scores from Andy Hayden, Ciaran Kelly and Keith Nealon frees kept them in it in the first half. Dungarvan got a goal 13 minutes into second half to go four up. Keith Nealon answered with a goa for Nenagh. John Cahalan, Darragh Peters, Andy Hayden all got points in second half to claim win and get Nenagh CBS off the mark with two valuable points.

PS Youghal 0-15 St Caimins Shannon 0-13

Pobalscoil Na Trionoide had to survive a last minute 20 metre free before ekking out a hard fought two point victory over St Camins of Clare in Charleville. The Youghal school team can be thankful to free taker Declan Dalton who contributed 11 points altogether. Youghal finished the first half 10 points to 6 ahead thanks mainly to a purple patch between the 24th and 27th minute where they scored 4 points, 2 from Dalton and one each from wing backs Matthew Farrell and Cathal Deane. St. Caimins started the second half brightly with points from Aron Shanagher before Dalton pegged them back again with two long range frees. There was never any more than a two point difference between the teams and the seasiders can be thankful to a brilliant save by keeper Harry Olliphant on the 20th minute whose superb save prevented a certain goal. Two vital points in the last ten minutes by corner forward Chris Morrison and Darragh O’Brien (32nd minute) left a two point gap before St. Camins were awarded that final chance in the last minute. The free was saved and Pobalscoil now top their group after two hard fought victories over Templemore and St. Camins.

Our Ladys Templemore 1-20 Charleville CBS 2-14

The action began on Tuesday with a 1-20 to 2-14 victory for Our Ladys Templemore over Charleville CBS in Group 3. Our Ladys led by 0-13 to 0-5 at half-time having played with the aid of the wind in the opening period. Our Ladys stretched their lead to 10 points early in the second half before goals by Tim O’Mahony and Darragh Fitzgibbon helped Charleville to go on a 2-4 to 0-1 run to leave just a point between the teams after 42 minutes. The schools scored two points each before a goal by Our Ladys substitute Radostaw Natkaniec in the 51st minute put some daylight between the teams. Charleville fought back to reduce the deficit to two points and despite some late pressure, the Our Ladys defence held out to secure a three point win.

Midleton CBS 0-11 HS Clonmel 0-10

Midleton CBS got their Harty cup campaign off to a winning start with the narrowest of victories over the High School Clonmel in Fraher Field yesterday. In conditions that were challenging for hurling the Clonmel side aided by the breeze took a lead of 6 points to 2. Clonmel were dominate in their half back line and Paul Maher at centre back was the launching pad for a lot of their attacks. Midleton started to settle into the game with some fine scores from placed balls by Kevin O’Sullivan. At half time the Clonmel side lead by 6 points to 5. Midleton CBS came out strong in the second half and equalised straight away with a point from Garan Manley. The second half was a real tit for tat affair with each side trading points leaving the score at 10 points apiece with minutes remaining. The decisive score of the game came from the Midleton captain Gary Leahy when he slung the ball over the bar from the tightest of angles to give Midleton a one point lead that they held onto until the final whistle. Best performers for Midleton CBS were Sean O’Connor, John Looney and Kevin O’Sullivan. Clonmel players to impress were Paul Maher, Ross Peters and Kyle Peters.

On Wednesday, there are 7 attractive games down for decision, all of which start at 1:30pm. In Group 1, Thurles CBS will look to build on their impressive Round 1 performance against Flannans when they take on West Limerick Colleges playing their first game in the competition. This game takes place in Claughan.  The other Group 1 encounter sees PS Blackwater looking to rebound from their opening day loss to the defending champions Ard Scoil Ris when they play St. Flannans in Kilmallock

In Group 2, our Game of the Week sees Castletroy College taking on De La Salle Waterford in Cahir. Castletroy had a bye in Round 1 and come in to this game looking to make a good start backed by Limerick Minors Lorcan Lyons, Barry Nash and Andy la Touche Cosgrave. De La Salle on the other hand will be looking to avoid another defeat ably led by their management team of Kevin Moran and Johnathan O Mordha.

In the other game in this group, St. Colmans Fermoy and Gaelcolaiste Mhuire will meet at Watergrasshill. Both schools had opening round victories, coincidently by a margin of four points. St. Colmans may have more confidence going in to this game having defeated 2013/2014 finalists Scoil Na Trionoide Naofa Doon in Round 1 but Gaelcolaiste Mhuire will also be encouraged by their 1-14 to 1-10 victory over De La Salle Waterford.

In Group 3, St. Caimins Shannon will play their first game in the competition against a Pobalscoil na Tríonóide Youghal side which recorded an impressive two point victory over Our Ladys Templemore in Round 1. This game is fixed for Charleville.

Finally, in Group 4 there are two Tipperary schools looking to stay in contention after opening round defeats. Nenagh CBS lost out in Round 1 to Hamilton High School Bandon after a high scoring game, 4-10 to 2-13. On this occasion, they take on a Dungarvan CBS side who were impressive 2-11 to 0-7 winners over High School Clonmel last time out. The venue for Wednesday’s game is Leahy Park Cashel. For the Clonmel school, a victory is essential as they travel to Fraher Field Dungarvan to play Midleton CBS who received a bye in Round 1. Midleton as defending Dean Ryan champions and semi-finalists again this season will look to build on their success in the Junior ranks and qualify for the Harty Cup knockout stages.
