Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship Final – Thurles Sarsfields 1-16 Clonoulty-Rossmore 1-7

Thurles Sars still Tipp stars

Thurles Sarsfields 1-16 Clonoulty-Rossmore 1-7

THURLES SARS retained their Tipperary senior hurling title in dull and damp Semple Stadium yesterday, capping off a superb year for their four Tipperary All-Ireland-winning stars, but only after a testing final few minutes against a young Clonoulty-Rossmore side that will surely come again. All four of Sars’ county brigade produced on the day, Michael Cahill doing as good a man-marking job on Clonoulty dangerman John O’Neill (on whom more anon) as could reasonably be expected, Padraic Maher giving a towering man-of-the-match performance at centre-back, Pa Bourke doing far more in general play than his four points from frees would suggest, while player-of-the-year Lar Corbett stamped his quality on proceedings with the decisive second-half score, a goal of typical quality.

This wasn’t just about the Sars stars, however. Midfielder Michael Gleeson is a hurler of real quality, had a brilliant hour; forwards Richie Ruth, Stephen Lillis and youngsters Denis Maher and sub Aidan McCormack, worked their collective socks off but were also deadly in their shooting. At the back, goalkeeper and captain Paddy McCormack was magnificent, and two saves in the final five minutes (the first from the ever-dangerous Clonoulty full-forward Thomas Butler, the second from the aforementioned John O’Neill) were of the very highest calibre. Then you had full-back Kevin O’Gorman, tasked with trying to hold out the powerful Butler and succeeding admirably, and who himself made a tremendous flying body-block in the 48th minute of yet another certain goal-bound shot from – yes, you’ve guessed it – John O’Neill, surely a star in the making. Had any (or all) of those shots gone in, who knows to what heights Clonoulty might have raised their game? As it was, however, Sars held out, and held on for what was ultimately a comfortable and fully merited win.

Watched by a subdued crowd of only 6,224 (second lowest attendance in over 20 years and a major disappointment in a year in which so much glory was visited on the county), the hotly-fancied ‘home’ side got off to a flying start, were six points to nil ahead after 13 minutes thanks to two points each from the powerful Lillis and the quicksilver Ruth, one apiece from placed balls by Bourke and the veteran Johnny Enright. A pity, from a neutral point of view; Clonoulty were always going to have their hands full but now their task became monumental. Even as people were worrying about a landslide, however, they came thundering into the game, centre-back John Devane prominent, but it was captain and wing-forward Tom Butler (not to be confused with cousin Thomas) supplying the inspiration. A hat-trick of points from Tom, freetaker Timmy Hammersley adding another, and when the ubiquitous John O’Neill bounced home a 20m free in the 29th minute it left just two points between the teams at the break, 0-9 to 1-4, and the prospect of a real contest to come.

The second half, however, began ominously for Clonoulty; only a fortunate block by Padraig Heffernan denied Lar Corbett what looked a certain goal just seconds after the restart (super delivery by midfielder Gleeson), but Sars wouldn’t be denied for long. Three fine points by Denis Maher and two from Aidan McCormack (two teenagers, the latter still a minor and scorer of 19 points in the recent minor county final success against Nenagh Eire Óg), against just one point for Clonoulty, from Hammersley, had the champions comfortably ahead at the three-quarter mark, and when Lar Corbett grabbed yet another seeing-eye centre from Gleeson on 46 minutes, stepped inside his marker and drilled to the net, it was practically out of sight – 1-14 to 1-5.

Hurling, however, is a funny old game and fortunes can change quite dramatically in the twinkling of an eye. Could have happened here too had any of those three goal-scoring opportunities that Clonoulty created for themselves in the final minutes been availed of. A combination of superb goal-keeping and great defence, however, allied to a bit of luck, meant Sars could breathe fairly easily as the minutes wound down, and for a roll-leading 31st time, Dan Breen rests once again in Thurles. Deserved, definitely, but there’s surely more in this team.

Scorers for Thurles Sars: D Maher 0-4; P Bourke 0-4 (frees); L Corbett 1-0; R Ruth 0-2; A McCormack 0-2; J Enright 0-2 (frees); S Lillis 0-2 (0-1 s/l).

Thurles double up

From the Irish Times newspaper

Thurles Sarsfields 1-16 Clonoulty-Rossmore 1-7: HURLER OF the Year Lar Corbett blasted home a 45th minute goal to seal back-to-back Tipperary senior titles for Thurles Sarsfields in a disappointing final at Semple Stadium, Thurles yesterday. Sarsfields seldom looked like surrendering their crown although Clonoulty-Rossmore recovered from a poor start to be only two points adrift at the break. Corbett’s goal opened a nine -point gap between the sides and ended Clonoulty’s hopes as two late quality saves by Thurles goalkeeper Patrick McCormack denied Clonoulty’s Thomas Butler and John O’Neill a rallying goal.

With Pádraic Maher turning in a man-of-the-match performance for Sarsfields at centre half back, Thurles hit six points without reply against the breeze in 12 minutes. Clonoulty-Rossmore were still five points adrift approaching half-time when John O’Neill lashed a 20-metre free to the net to cut the interval deficit to 1-4 to 0-9. Sarsfields stamped their authority on proceedings on the resumption. Under-21 star Denis Maher flashed over three points, and sub Aidan McCormack added two more to Timmy Hammersley’s sole response for Clonoulty, to put six points between them. Then came the final nail in the Clonoulty coffin as Ritchie Ruth and Michael Gleeson combined to set up Corbett whose finish was clinical.

SARSFIELDS: P McCormack; M Cahill, K O’Gorman, David Maher; B O’Dwyer, P Maher, D Kennedy; M Gleeson, A Kennedy; L Corbett(1-0), D Maher (0-4), S Lillis (0-2); R Ruth (0-2), P Bourke(0-4), J Enright (0-2). Sars plant successive flags but set sights on loftier summits

By Diarmuid O’Flynn for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Monday, November 01, 2010

IN A year in which he has already enjoyed All-Ireland success with the Tipperary All-Ireland-winning team, this was another goal achieved; that was the reaction of Thurles Sars’ outstanding full-forward Pa Bourke after yesterday’s county senior hurling win over Clonoulty-Rossmore. “We’re delighted, of course, this was our goal from the start of the year – today was for everyone in the panel, from 1 to 33 – everyone who got to play, including those who came, we all worked hard, we all did it for each other. We got back together last January, took it step by step; we got through the Mid championship fairly unscathed, said we had to knuckle down from then on. We had Loughmore-Castleiney – our good neighbours from over the road – in the quarter-final, got over that, then got a bit of luck to get past Toomevara in the semi-final, barely got over the line.”

Despite a number of goal chances conceded in the final minutes, it was a relatively comfortable win in the end for Thurles; the real scare for them came two weeks ago in that semi-final win, a last-minute disputed 20m free at a time when Sars trailed by two points, a free that simply had to be goaled. Doing the business – one Pa Bourke, a drilled shot into the corner past a packed Toomevara defensive line. Were it not for that goal… “Ah sure look,” he shrugs, “You’re a hero one day, you could be the villain the next – we were just lucky to get over the line.”

Hard to believe for such a storied club, but this was Thurles Sarsfields’ first back-to-back title success since 1965. That year, in fact, and testament to their dominance in Tipperary hurling at a time when Tipperary hurling was dominant nationwide, Sars actually completed their second five-in-a-row in just eleven years, Toomevara the only team between them and a scarcely credible 11-in-a-row, when their bitter rivals from the north county beat them in 1960. History, says Pa, all history. “All we wanted to win was one-in-a-row; we weren’t thinking about two-in-a-row, three-in-a-row or anything like that, we only want to win it every year we can. Lucky enough we have a good bunch of players here at the moment, and we have done back-to-back, so we’re delighted with that. It’s great to win your own county final, that’s what every club player wants to do from the start of the year.”

Next up is the Munster club semi-final against Limerick champions Kilmallock, in Kilmallock, Sars favourites not just to win there but to go on and win Munster. Pa, however, is distinctly underwhelmed by that forecast. “Looking at the bookies, we were already favourites to win Munster even before we won our own county, but we only ever beat Lixnaw (Kerry champions, last year) in that; we’re going to enjoy this for a couple of nights, get back to training on Wednesday night and start thinking about the Munster club then.”

Even as Pa and his teammates celebrated, disappointment for Clonoulty coach Conor Gleeson, but hope also. “It wasn’t an easy day for hurling, people may not realise it but underfoot conditions weren’t the best. When you come to a final you’d like to perform as well as you can, as well as you’re going in training, but we just didn’t do that today – you don’t score only 1-7 and win a county final against a team as good as Thurles Sarsfields. They’re an excellent side, and when you add Redser (O’Grady, suspended after the semi-final for two months) they’ll be even stronger; they’re well able to win possession, their forwards especially, and well able to score. They’re a fine side, they’ll take a lot of stopping. We’re a young side, we got to the quarter-final last year, semi-final the year before, the final this year, so those lads are knocking on the door. I know they’ll stick with it; it hurts to lose on a day like today but they’ll be back – you know what they say, you have to lose one to win one.”

AIB Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship – Kilmallock (Limerick) 2-11 Crusheen (Clare) 0-14

Clinical Kilmallock keep Crusheen at bay

Crusheen (Clare) 0-14 Kilmallock (Limerick) 2-11

By Michael Moynihan for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Monday, November 01, 2010

A KILMALLOCK scoring burst – 2-4 in six minutes at the start of the second-half – was the turning point in this AIB Munster club SHC quarter-final yesterday in Cusack Park. The outbreak of goals and points transformed what had been a dull encounter into a rip-roaring contest between the Limerick champions and Clare kingpins Crusheen, and though Kilmallock won, their opponents lost little in defeat. Seven points down early in the second half, the Clare champions could have been forgiven for folding their tents, but they dug in and with two minutes left were only two points down. However, it was Kilmallock that would close the game out. “That five-minute spell… the second goal killed us,” Crusheen boss Michael Browne said afterwards. “One goal you could make up, but the second goal was the real killer.”

His opposite number, Tony Considine, agreed, adding that some “raw things” had been told to the Kilmallock players at half-time and they’d responded. “The two goals – there’s no such thing as a bad goal. You’ll take any one you’ll get, and once we got those goals, that was it. We drove on from there.” Kilmallock defended the scoreboard end in the first half and maybe showed the effects of a few weeks’ inaction – Crusheen thundered into the game, driven on by a dominant half-back line. Gerry O’Grady and Gearoid O’Donnell snapped over points either side of a Pat Vaughan free, which put the Clare champions three points up in as many minutes.

The springboard for Crusheen’s dominance was their much-vaunted defence, but there was an early blow to that sector. On ten minutes, star centre-back Cian Dillon dislocated a thumb and had to go off for lengthy treatment; though he returned, he wasn’t the same player, and with Paddy Vaughan, Crusheen’s scorer-in-chief, carrying an injury into the game the Clare side were under pressure. Kilmallock settled to their task, too. It took the Limerick champions fifteen minutes to collect their first score, through Paudie O’Dwyer, but by the 21st minute they’d cut Crusheen’s lead to one through Jake Mulcahy and an Andrew O’Shaughnessy free. The highlight of the half came on 23 minutes, when a sumptuous sideline cut from Pat Vaughan was given as a point, despite Barry Hennessy’s valiant effort in the Kilmallock goal. O’Shaughnessy responded with a free and Vaughan answered for Crusheen from another dead ball. Eoin Ryan had a late score from distance for Kilmallock but Vaughan – who else? – punished Kilmallock indiscipline with another free, leaving it 0-7 to 0-5 at the break and the crowd, frankly, desperate for a spark to the game.

“We should have been more than two points down,” Considine admitted. “We weren’t hurling with our normal fluency and we weren’t finding our men the way we usually do – but then, Ennis isn’t an easy place to come to for a result.” Informed by Considine that they’d given Crusheen too much respect in the first half, Kilmallock wired into the game on the resumption, snapping over four points in four minutes. On 35 minutes, Crusheen ‘keeper Donal Tuohy dropped a Bryan O’Sullivan delivery and Andrew O’Shaughnessy swept home the game’s first goal; within sixty seconds a high dropping ball into the square enticed Tuohy off his line, only for Shane O’Donnell to touch the ball home. Suddenly it was 2-9 to 0-7. Crusheen rallied – Gearoid O’Donnell drove forward for two points, while Vaughan, injured though he was, cut another sideline over the bar, but the Claremen needed goals and with Gavin O’Mahony excelling at centre-back for Kilmallock, they never looked like getting one.

Joe Meaney eventually cut the deficit to two points for Crusheen with two minutes left, but Kilmallock, fittingly, had the last word when Paudie O’Brien lofted over their final score from halfway. Considine acknowledged that Kilmallock still have some work to do, despite their second-half scoring burst. “We were still loose after the scores and that won’t do against other teams, teams that will take advantage. We have a tendency to sit back, size up the opposition, score a few goals and then sit back again. We have to get that out of them – they can’t be admiring hurlers and feel they’ve the game won if they’ve a couple of goals scored. .” Kilmallock will now host Tipperary champions, Thurles Sars, at home. “We said coming up that we wanted to bring the Tipp champions to Kilmallock,” Considine concluded. “It’ll be a great occasion, but occasions are for spectators. Matches are for teams to win, and we’ll be looking to have a good cut at it.”

Irish Daily Mail International Rules Series 2nd Test – Australia 55 Ireland 52

Irish revival not enough as Aussies let off hook

Australia 0-14-13 (55) Ireland 1-11-13 (52) (Australia win series 102-92)

By Daragh Ó Conchúir, Croke Park for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Monday, November 01, 2010

AUSTRALIA dominated almost six of the eight quarters but in the final period at Croke Park on Saturday night, such was the passion and understanding for what is required to prosper in this game, that Ireland almost produced an unlikely victory. The series needs physicality, speed and competitiveness to excite the punters, not the artificial frenetic ‘upyaboya’ schtick of the ubiquitous Hector O hEochagáin, and they got that in the end. Ireland manager Anthony Tohill was a picture of animation in that final quarter, exhorting his players to attack in numbers so that the man in possession had support. He was almost as tired as they were at the end and was certainly as disappointed.

“The lads gave absolutely everything,” he said afterwards. “They were probably coming from too far back and even with that we got three up and walked away with nothing. I thought we were good enough to win the game but, to be fair to the players, they just exhausted themselves in the latter stages of the game. We came up just short. It’s not as hard to take when you give that much effort but it is very disappointing. We deserved something and we walk away with nothing.” There was certainly a feeling that the Irish had emptied themselves in a manner that wasn’t the case the previous weekend.

For the opening two quarters, the crowd could only admire what Tohill called the “fantastic football” of the Australians. Just as in Limerick, their ability to find space and accuracy of kick-passing was magnificent and Adam Goodes was the go-to man. The Australian captain caused Finian Hanley and Kevin Reilly serious discomfort but did have less of an influence when Kieran McKeever took up the challenge. The game really opened up in the third period, Brendan Murphy setting the tone with a brilliant over kicked on the run. Steven McDonnell was picking up breaks around midfield and it was evident that Ireland could compete if they stood man-for-man and did not allow the Australians to get into a lot of space.

“I think they only won two of their seven (kickouts) in the first half and maybe four from 15 all night,” Tohill said. “They did win a few out in front but when they had to kick it out, I think we won most of those. We did okay on their kickouts; on our own we could have done a bit better.” Overs from Todd Banfield, Goodes and Eddie Betts stretched the Australian advantage to 17 when James Kavanagh struck for a goal from close range in the 50th minute – after Bernard Brogan had occupied Dustin Fletcher – and the score breathed fire into Ireland’s hopes. They only won that quarter 21-20 (though they were still 48-38 in arrears), but they were now doing many things right at least. The final quarter was a superior effort once again, until fatigue took its toll.

With Graham Canty an inspirational driving force, Ireland kicked the first eight scores, but critically, only one of the first six was an over, supplied by Seán Cavanagh. Brogan blazed a behind when presented with a goal opportunity by Clarke but when Michael Murphy sent over two three-pointers – the second a wonderful, soaring kick from the 45m line towards the Hogan Stand side – the attendance of 61,842 erupted. With Ireland leading 52-48, they were only an over off tying the series. Australia didn’t score until four minutes from time and though it was only a behind from Dane Swan, it stemmed the Irish momentum. Green slotted two further overs to remove any doubt. “They were out on their feet,” Tohill concluded. “They just gave everything they had and I couldn’t find fault in any of them. They were just fantastic.”

Munster Camogie Final – Inniscarra 0-10 Granagh/Ballingarry 0-7

Iniscarra (Cork) defeated Granagh/Ballingarry (Limerick) by 0-1o to 0-7 in the Munster Camogie Senior Club Final on Saturday at Newtownshandrum.

Inniscarra (Cork) 0-10 v 0-07 Granagh-Ballingarry(Limerick)

This was a real battle down to the final whistle. A tough game in which neither side got much room to make use of the ball or time to settle on it. Such was the game that most of the scoring came from frees and in this Inniscarra’s Joanne Casey and Granagh’s Eileen O’Brien were virtually unerring. They battled up and down the field and defenses were dominant throughout, as Casey and O’Brien traded frees and ‘45s. Granagh did open up a two point lead mid-way through the first half when O’Brien converted a ‘45 to give her side a 4pt to 2 lead. Allanah Twohig looked to upset this but had a great shot on goal saved by Aileen O’Sullivan on the Granagh line. Then Casey and O’Brien traded freed to the half time whistle, with Casey converting a ‘45, O’Brien a free, two Casey frees and O’Brien closed the half for Granagh with a converted free giving them a slim 1 point lead at the break, 6pts to 5pts.

The second half was equally as tough and it looked that which ever side managed to break through for that goal would win out. Both sets of mid-fields and forwards worked tirelessly to try and break down the opposition. Inniscarra were first off the mark in the second half as Joanne Casey converted two frees to level and then take the lead for the Cork side. Almost ten minutes elapsed before the next score and this fell in the way of an Eileen O’Keeffe free to level the game yet again. The next score would be vital and as the Limerick side looked to be tiring Joanne Casey took hold in the center of the field she pointed from play and then converted a free which gave Inniscarra a two point lead heading into the last five minutes. Indeed Casey was extremely industrious over the last quarter, and this player of the game performance is what was the difference as she was helping out in defense as Granagh looked to get through on goal and also setting up attacks. Laura Burke helped out as the second half sub pointed from play to give some breathing space to Inniscarra. Granagh still tried to break down that defense to look for the equalising goal but Orla Healy, Liz Hayes and Joanne Casey held firm and Inniscarra went on to win their first ever Munster title.

Munster Senior Club Camogie Final ‘Corn Thomais Mhic Dhonnbha’

Inniscarra(Cork) v Granagh-Ballingarry(Limerick)

This Limerick side are no strangers to Munster Final Club day as they have from 1996 to 2004 claimed nine in a row of county titles. In this time they also captured Seven Munster titles and three club All Ireland titles. This is their first time back in the Munster final since 2004, with their last county championship win in 2006. They line out with the experienced Vera Sheehan, Eileen O’Brien, prolific scorer Fiona Morrissey and daughter of Ciaran – Sarah Carey in their side. Indeed young Carey is to be honoured as Munster young player of the year. This is an experienced side with many survivers from the last attempt at Munster and their All-Ireland Club in 2003 and All-Ireland sevens in 2002 still remaining, including captain Fiona Hickey who is now just 23 years of age.

First timers to Munster Championship after their first county win, after the 3rd attempt, Inniscarra will be hoping that county seniors Rena Buckley, Joanne Casey and Niamh Dilworth will have the experience to lead them a step further. Team captain Margaret Noelle O’Sullivan also represented the county at minor and intermediate level. They will be the underdogs for this final but will relish that title as they have done all year and is has served them well so far. They will have to be in peak form to overcome the challange of the Limerick side but look forward to upsetting the odds.

Granagh-Ballingarry (Limerick): A O’Sullivan, S Carey, L Leslie, A McCarthy, F Hickey(C), A Sheehan, E Hickey, T Power, V Sheehan, E O’Brien, N Houlihan, S Enright, M Fitzgerald, J Clifford, F Morrissey

Munster Camogie Intermediate Club Final – Lismore (Waterford) 5-5 Newmarket-on-Fergus (Clare) 0-11

Lismore (Waterford) defeated Newmarket-on-Fergus (Clare) by 5-5 to 0-11 in the Munster Camogie Intermediate Club Final on Saturday at Buttevant.

Lismore (Waterford) 5-05 v 0-11 Newmarket-on-Fergus (Clare)

Lismore the eventual winners threatened early in this game but saw a ‘45 attempt drift wide inside the opening minute. It was the youngster Niki Kaiser of Newmarket who opened the scoring after a deft handpass from sister, and captain, Ruth put her through the defense. Niki was settling well into her role and causing trouble in the inside forward line so a foul on the youngster as she broke onto the ball gave Newmarket their second oppertunity and Aine O’Brien duely slotted over. Newmarket looked to be in control in many areas but long high balls into their rear line of defense started to cause trouble and one of these, from player of the game Shona Curran, drifted in over Carol Twoomey’s head and gave Lismore the lead after 8 minutes. Aoife Hannon who was accurate with frees converted a free after Kate Henegan was fouled. Aine O’Brien and Niki Kaiser pointed again for the Banner side as the sides drew level again. Hannon was on hand for Lismore to convert again to go ahead but they were level two minutes later when Deirdre Cassidy pointed from the right wing. Lismore were threatening more and Toomey was on hand in goal to pull of a point blank save from Caithriona McGlone it was only delaying matters though as Hannon converted a free and 16yr old Ruth Geoghan was on hand for Lismore’s second goal after collecting and rounding her marker she crashed to the net giving Toomey no chance. Aine O’Brien converted a free for Newmarket in their last score of the half while Hannon with a like score for Lismore and then as Newmarket looked to be holding out under severe pressure Caithriona McGlone did goal as Toomey attempted to bring the sliotar back from over the line. The winners went in with a 3-04 to 0-06 lead.

The opening score of the second took nearly ten minutes to materialise as defenses controlled the game. It was Lismore who eventually broke the hoodoo after Cathriona Ormonde goaled after the third attempt with Toomey having put herself on the line to defend the goal line. And Ruth Geoghan followed swiftly with a point. Newmarket did not lie down though and pushed forward at every attempt and points followed from a Niki Kaiser free, Ruth Kaiser, Iris Kaiser and a second Niki free. Ruth Kasier had the gap back to 6 with her second free but that was as close as the Banner side got as Lismore defended well. Probably it was Newmarket’s down fall that they were trying from goal from here as point chances were there for the taking and so they never threatened Lismore as captain Aisling O’Brien was never really threatened as her back line dominated. Indeed this all out attack left Newmarket open behind and Ruth Geoghan again got the chance to break onto a long clearance and grabbed her second goal of the game and made sure of the Lismore win.

Munster Intermediate Club Camogie Final ‘Trixie Toomey Memorial Cup’

Newmarket-on-Fergus(Clare) v Lismore(Waterford)

This is an historic final in many ways. The first ever Intermediate Club final to be played, the cup donated by a family from County Clare, the Toomey family in memory of their late husband and father after the many years he served to both club and county camogie as selector and trainer. Trixie was a Newmarket man and now his native club are in the final with his daughter Carol playing in goal. It is sure to be an emotional day for the family whatever the outcome. These two clubs will never have met but as county champions both are looking to go one step further. A close contest is expected as both had convincing wins over their semi-final opponents of Templemore and Mallow.

The Newmarket team has strong family links through out the field with the Kaisers all having played for the Clare county teams from Captain Ruth right down to 15year old Niki at corner forward. Also the McMahons and O’Learys. Aimee McInerney, Aine O’Brien, Aoife Griffin, Erica Minogue and Joanne Walsh also have county experience and saying this they are a young team with average age of 20 years.

This Lismore team bases its roots in Feile na nGael 1999 as they have represented the county for the last eleven years. This is the first Senior county championship for this club in nine years and they have worked hard to get to this level. Shauna Kiernan, Maire Russell, Rachel Whelan, Grainne Kenneally, team captain Aisling O’Brien, Shona Curran and Niamh Ryan have all county experience over the last number of years and with Grainne Kenneally having captained U.C.C. to the Ashbourne final last year. This lays all the markers for a tight game going all the way to the wire.

Newmarket-on-Fergus(Clare): C Toomey, A Griffin, J O’Leary, C O’Leary, A McInerney, R McMahon, C Kaiser, R Kaiser(C), J Walsh, S McMahon, E Minogue, A O’Brien, D Cassidy, I Kaiser, N Kaiser

Lismore(Waterford): A O’ Brien(C), J Houlihan, N Ryan, L Buckley, J Hannon, S Curran, S Fenton, M Russell, R Whelan, G Kenneally, A Hannon, S Kiernan, K Heneghan, C Ormonde, T Morrissey

Daryl Darcy U17 Football Final – Tipperary 3-13 Limerick 0-15

Daryl Darcy U17 Football Tournament Final

Report by Tommy Fitzgerald on behalf of Tipp U17 Football

Monday October 25, Semple Stadium

In the inaugural final of the U17 Inter County football Tournament dedicated to the memory of the late Daryl Darcy of the Shannon Rvs club, Tipperary and Limerick renewed rivalry at Semple Stadium on Monday afternoon last and following a hard and competitive sixty minutes football, Tipp having led from start to finish emerged deserved winners with seven points to spare. Having finished runners up by a six point margin to Limerick in the preliminary rounds Tipp went out determined to reverse the result and made the early pressure pay off as T.J.Ryan opened the scoring with a cracking goal and followed up with a pointed free to go four points clear after ten minutes.

But Limerick quickly recovered from the early setback and hit back with three points including two frees before Michael Quinlivan burst through to restore Tipps four point advantage with goal number two. With Limericks Patrick Brislane gaining a lot of possession around mid field they continued to make inroads on the Tipp defence adding three well taken points and in a fiercely contested final ten minutes of the first half Tipp regrouped with Greg Henry, Craig Condon, T.J.Ryan and Michael Quinlivan all adding points each to bring Tipps first half tally to 2-5

The twin Limerick scoring duo of Denis O’Dea and Patrick Delee continued to pose a threat to Tipps defence with a number of points each and when Kieran Larkin raced through only to see his goal bound shot diverted away to safety with a brilliant fingertips save by Gearoid Slattery, Tipp knew they would have to dig deep in the second half to forge a victory as the Limerick side were still within striking distance at 0-9, two points adrift at the break The introduction in the second half of Loughmore/Castleineys Liam McGrath who had played a huge part in Moyle Rvs elimination from this years Tipperarys Senior Football championship less than twenty four hours earlier proved a timely stroke of genius by the Tipp selectors as his presence caused mayhem in the Limerick defence with his superb opening point as Tipp raced into a six point lead with two pointed frees by T.J.Ryan and one by Greg Henry.

At the other end of the field with Limerick pressing forward Tipps goalie Gearoid Slattery was again called into play with a superb double save but any chance of a Limerick upset was effectively ended with ten minutes remaining when Cathal Quigleys perfect pass found Greg Henry who raced through the Limerick defence and gave the Limerick goalie Conor Bonfil no chance stretching Tipps lead to nine points with a brilliant goal. Limerick continued to fight back finding the target with a number of points but Tipps ability to turn possession into scores paid rich dividends as T.J.Ryan (2) and Jason Lonergan and Michael Quinlivan all added points in the closing stages bringing Tipps final tally to 3-13 to Limericks 0-15, to finish convincing seven point margin winners . For Tipperary a sweet victory with some great performances throughout the field notably by Gearoid Slattery, David Mulcahy, Thomas O’Donoghue, Adrian Maguire, Cathal Quigley, Greg Henry, T.J.Ryan , Craig Condon, Michael Quinlivan and Liam McGrath.

For Limerick, goalie Conor Bonfil, Patrick O’Dea, Kevin Brosnan, Patrick Brislane, Patrick Delee, Denis O’Dea, Eoin Farrell and Dean Lillis were always prominent over the hour. After the game Tipperary Captain Dara Butler was presented with the Daryl Darcy Memorial Trophy by members of the Darcy family.
