Munster SHC Quarter Final – Cork 3-15 Tipperary 0-14

Cork defeated Tipperary by 3-15 to 0-14 in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship Quarter Final on Sunday at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Cork 3-15 Tipperary 0-14

From the web site
They’re back. After three years in Tipperary’s shadow, Cork re-emerged as a hurling powerhouse with a stunning 3-15 to 0-14 destruction of the Munster champions at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday. Aisake Ó hAilpín had a hand in each of Cork’s goals and scored their third after an outstanding game at full-forward for the Rebels. The giant Na Piarsaigh man tormented Tipperary full-back Padraic Maher for the first 23 minutes, setting up two goals for his partner in a two-man inside forward line, Patrick Horgan, before he ended the game as a contest by hitting the back of the net with ten minutes left. It was an electrifying display from Ó hAilpín, who made his Senior debut in the three-point defeat to Tipperary last year, the lanky full-forward giving the kind of performance his older brother, Setanta, did for Cork during their period of dominance in the middle of the last decade.
However, Ó hAilpín was just one of several Cork heroes on the day. Eoin Cadogan, who missed most of the last eight weeks with a shin problem, was awesome at full-back. The Douglas man dominated rookie Tipperary full-forward Brian O’Meara and made a string of inspirastional catches on the edge of the square. The Cork half-back line gave the best answer possible to the critics that were quick to write them off after the league final by completely dominating the game. They cleaned up under the Tipperary puck outs, as Ronan Curran and John Gardiner monopolised possession which they utilised cleverly to feed Aisake Ó hAilpín on the edge of the square.
Tipperary’s forwards started promisingly, but they were completely outplayed in the second half and the Premier men went 33 minutes in that period without a score from play, with Timmy Hammersley, a second half substitute, finally ending a miserable run with three minutes to go. Indeed, Eoin Kelly’s seven points from placed balls aside, the Tipperary attack completely misfired, with their half-forward line, in particular, failing to live with Cork’s intensity and constant harrying.
Cork led 2-5 to 0-10 at the break, but five successive points in a six-minute spell after the restart saw them take control. Tipperary were hanging on by their fingertips and needed a superb save from their goalkeeper, Brendan Cummins, to stay in the game. Aisake Ó hAilpín was still causing panic every time he got the ball and should have sent Cork into an unassailable lead in the 44th minute but he was penalised for taking too many steps after getting away from Paul Curran, who was moved to full-back in the first half. He had an even better chance later in the half, but he pulled his shot badly wide with only Cummins to beat after evading Curran once again.
However, he was not to be denied the goal his heroic efforts deserved. With ten minutes left, Jerry O’Connor found him all alone on the edge of the square with a clever pass and Ó hAilpín danced around Cummins to leave Cork 3-13 to 0-12 ahead. Cork’s dominance of the first quarter stemmed from the champions’ inability to deal with Dónal Óg Cusack’s short puck outs. The Cork goalkeeper looked for Curran and, particularly, Gardiner in the half-back line, who secured clean possession to feed the irrepressible Aisake Ó hAilpín.
The Cork full-forward – who made his Championship debut in the three-point defeat to Tipperary last year – completely dominated Padraic Maher and his finger prints were on two goals inside the first 23 minutes.
The first came just 13 minutes in, as Gardiner delivered a trademark long ball into the younger of the Ó hAilpín brothers, who stuck a paw into the air, turned and kicked past Cummins. However, Maher had piggy backed him as he attempted to shoot and referee Paddy Kelly had already signalled for a penalty. Patrick Horgan stepped up and drilled the ball into the top corner. Aisake Ó hAilpín’s presence on the edge of the square was causing panic in the Tipperary defence and a minute earlier he might have hit the back of the net himself had Cummins not made a brilliant block.
Tipperary led by 0-3 to 0-1 at that stage after Cusack had denied Lar Corbett with a neat save seven minutes in. The strong-running Corbett – who scored two points from play in the first half – won a breaking ball in the inside forward line was clear on goal, but his shot was well saved by Cusack. Padraic Maher’s day of torment continued when he was booked for a foul on Ó hAilpín and Ben O’Connor dropped over the free to leave Cork 1-3 to 0-3 ahead. However, things got even worse for the Munster champions midway through the half when Cork snaffled a second goal. Horgan again was the beneficiary of Ó hAilpín’s athleticism, as he cracked a super shot into the top corner in front of the Blackrock end supporters after the Cork full-forward had spilled possession after winning another clean catch.
Tipperary manager Liam Sheedy immediately moved to reduce the damage and Padraic Maher was switched out to wing-back, with Curran going into full-back and Michael Cahill moving back to mark Horgan in the corner. The move worked, but the damage had already been done. Tipperary did finish the half the stronger as they came to grips with Cusack’s puck outs and started to win some ball in the half-forward line. John O’Brien scored two points from play and Brendan Maher’s score just before the break left just two points between the sides at half-time. But the damage had already been done to Tipperary’s confidence and they were a spent force when Cork hit five points on the bounce after the restart. Tipperary now face the prospect of the All-Ireland Qualifiers while Cork will play under strength Limerick in the Munster semi-final in three weeks’ time.

Leading GAA figures gathered today in Adare Manor Hotel for the official launch of the Munster GAA Senior Hurling and Football Championships.

In attendance were Munster GAA Chairman Sean Walsh, all other Provincial Officers, representatives from GAA Hurling sponsors Ethiad Airways, Centra and Guinness, representatives from GAA Football Championship sponsors SuperValu, Ulster Bank and Vodafone, as well as inter-county players and managers from all Munster counties. County Officers were also present showing their commitment and support for the Provincial championships. Munster has this year shown great innovation with the appointment of County Ambassadors in Hurling and Football from each county who will be available to the media and who have themselves graced the playing fields of Munster with distinction in times past.

The draw for the Munster GAA Hurling Championship has produced some intriguing games and none more so than the opening game on Sunday May 30th when arch rivals Cork and Tipperary clash in Pairc Ui Chaoimh with the winners advancing to a semi final date with Limerick. The clash of Waterford and Clare in Semple Stadium, Thurles on Bank Holiday Monday June 7th. promises to be another gripping encounter. The Munster GAA Senior Hurling Championship Final takes place on Sunday July 11th.

Speaking at the Launch Munster Chairman Sean Walsh said ‘’The 2009 Munster GAA Hurling Championship produced great entertainment and we look forward to another great championship this year. Tipperary are the reigning champions and will be hoping to make it three-in-a-row while Cork will be looking to get revenge for their narrow defeat last year to the same opposition . Waterford will be looking to build on their progress in reaching last year’s Munster Final while Clare will put the disappointment of recent League Final defeats behind them will be hoping to use the All Ireland Under 21 success as a platform to build success. A youthful Limerick side will also be hoping to make an impression and their loyal supporters on Shannon side will I am sure give them that extra push and encouragement’’.

Munster GAA Chairman Sean Walsh said that the Munster Football Championship was keenly contested last year and this year’s competition looks every bit as open. ‘’The success of Cork and Limerick in winning League Titles while at the same time Waterford, who lost to Limerick in the Div. 4 League Final, had some very encouraging results. Clare were pipped at the post in the final game to gain promotion from Division 4. Reigning champions, Kerry, have lost some great players to retirement, while Tipperary, with an Under 21 Title to savour will also be in the mix’’.

This championship kicks off in Semple Stadium, Thurles on Sunday next May 16th.with All Ireland Champions Kerry taking on Tipperary. A week later Fraher Field Dungarvan is the venue for the clash of Waterford and Clare. The two semi finals are fixed for Sunday June 6th. with reigning Munster Football champions, Cork, taking on the winners of

the Kerry/Tipperary, while Limerick, beaten narrowly in the final last year, take on the winners of the Waterford/Clare game. The Munster GAA Senior Football Final takes place on Sunday July 4th.

Munster SFC Quarter Final – Waterford 1-10 Clare 0-9

Waterford defeated Clare by 1-10 to 0-9 in the Munster Senior Football Championship Quarter Final on Sunday at Fraher Field Dungarvan.

Clinical Déise dig out victory

Waterford 1-10 Clare 0-9

By Fintan O’Toole for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Monday, May 24, 2010

THE mantle of favouritism is one Waterford footballers are unaccustomed to holding entering championship clashes, but they managed to cope with that pressure effectively at a sweltering Fraher Field, Dungarvan yesterday. They did not replicate the superiority they enjoyed in the league meeting between the sides six weeks previously but Waterford’s professionalism and assurance still proved adequate to sweep them to victory over Clare in this Munster SFC quarter-final. In truth, this clash was never likely to be as lopsided as its NFL Division 4 predecessor. The manner in which Clare manager Micheal McDermott reconfigured his line-up with multiple personnel changes meant Waterford were facing a vastly different team.

Clare played smarter football here, flooding bodies behind the ball when not in possession and operating in a fashion that erased any prospects of conceding an avalanche of points. But Waterford’s progress can be measured in how they responded. They never panicked when the game was going against them in the first half and while their football did not scale the heights of their closing matches in the league, they displayed the grim determination required to tough out championship victories. That steadfast refusal to quit on the task was rewarded when they pounced for the game-breaking score in the 42nd minute. Gary Hurney offered signals of the threat he could pose in the first half with his physique and aerial prowess, and twice Waterford nearly profited from his ball-winning abilities only for possession to slip away from Conor McGrath and Liam O Lionáin as they closed in on goal after Hurney off-loads.

Seven minutes into the second half, the big Ballinacourty man backed himself to go it alone. O Lionáin did brilliantly to win a sideline on the left flank under pressure and the An Rinn player took the kick himself, arcing a long searching pass into the Clare goalmouth. Hurney rose to collect before shrugging off a few challenges and depositing a left-footed shot to the back of the net. It was a defining moment. Still Clare were not killed off and they will lament the other factors that contributed to their defeat. Clare produced a rousing opening to the game as they bossed the first 20 minutes and were full value for their 0-6 to 0-2 lead. Mark Tubridy was policing Waterford danger man Liam O Lionáin, Gordon Kelly played with a captain’s authority at centre-back and the sight of Declan Callinan dashing forward with purpose from his wing-back berth was frequent in early exchanges.

Long-serving David Russell helped them gain a foothold around the middle and with the likes of Callinan feasting on the breaks, the Clare attack were fed a regular diet of possession. Gary Brennan emerged as a perfect focal point when switched in to full-forward early on, Michael O’Shea was lively in the corner and while David Tubridy was well held in open play by Maurice O’Gorman, the Doonbeg attacker’s free-taking was stunning. He hoisted over a placed ball from 50 yards in the 20th minute with a tremendous shot to push Clare four points clear. But Clare’s inability to maintain those high standards compromised their hopes of securing success. After Tubridy kicked their sixth point of the game, they only added three points for the rest of the match and were held scoreless for the closing 22 minutes.

In one sense that was a testament to the clever and attentive defending of Waterford. Their nerves were frayed after that rickety opening but it did not generate chaos in their team, with Shane Briggs and Thomas O’Gorman strengthening their defensive spine. O’Gorman’s twin brother Maurice was the real standout though. Former Waterford manager John Kiely eulogised for years about the Nire man’s defensive abilities and yesterday he showcased them again by nullifying the sizeable threat that Tubridy posed. Their composure even when their football did not hit full speed brought Waterford into contention at the break when they only trailed 0-7 to 0-6. A powerful finish to the half yielded a flurry of scores with Patrick Hurney the key figure as he snared three points from scraps of possession.

Gary Hurney’s second-half goal set the stage for Waterford to power on but as players on both sides toiled in the searing heat, the intensity levels naturally dipped. Waterford struggled to source the scores to push on and Clare capitalised with Alan Clohessy and O’Shea restoring parity. However, Clare’s accuracy was flawed as they spurned a plethora of chances, the best falling to O’Shea in the 62nd minute when he flashed a great goal chance wide. Waterford developed a clinical edge and a chain of points from Tommy Prendergast, Brian Wall, Hurney and O Lionáin sealed their Munster semi-final spot.

Good, but it needs to get better

Tipperary 2-6 Kerry 2-18

By Tony Leen for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Monday, May 17, 2010

IN James L. Brooks’ feted romcom, As Good As It Gets, Jack Nicholson offends his date Helen Hunt so grievously that she’s walking out of the restaurant unless he pays her an immediate compliment. Nicholson tells her she makes him want to be a better man, a compliment so thoughtful that the swooned Hunt believes it’s the nicest she’s ever received. “Well then I overshot the runway,” admits Jack, “‘cos I was hoping just to say enough to get you to sit down.” Kerry’s own Jack watched his charges overshoot the runway in Thurles yesterday, a 12-point win against a game and physical opposition arguably more than the All-Ireland champions needed, or deserved.

Occasionally the modest crowd of just under 5,000 swooned like a Helen Hunt as Kieran Donaghy did a passable impression of an acrobatic tree climber, but it was only in the last third of the game that he finally freed himself from the barnacle-like efforts of Tipperary U21, Ciarán McDonald. Tipp coach John Evans likened Donaghy to a gazelle, and there is scarcely a finer sight than the Austin Stacks man hanging, momentarily suspended, under the aerial supply of his colleagues. If there is a purist’s debate about Donaghy’s preeminence, it might be with the slaloming skill-set of Colm Cooper. Together they are a fearful force, but Donaghy’s gift is bringing all comers into the game. His corner forward Bryan Sheehan hoovered up 2-5 in total yesterday. Yes it’s being churlish, but the only downside is that when Donaghy is fit and in this kind of form, Kerry tend to go too quickly, and too often, to their full forward. He might have made a third goal for Sheehan at Semple Stadium yesterday, but his fisted pass was ruled illegal under the third set of guidelines for hand-passing in the past year.

It proved an irksome intruder on an otherwise routine Munster Championship first-round afternoon, but the sense lingers that it won’t be the last words we’ll hear on the issue this summer. “Somewhere, down the line, there’s going to be a critical call that will cost a team a match,” reasoned a less-than-impressed Jack O’Connor afterwards. “All hell is going to break loose. Somebody, somewhere, seems determined to get that rule through by hook or by crook. There’s no other game in the world where you would change a fundamental skill and give the players a crash course a week before a big game. These players have been passing the ball one way for 15 years.”

When the Kerry management get around to reviewing this one, the kerfuffle over the handpass won’t be the most bothersome topic, though. Neither Tom O’Sullivan or Tommy Griffin looks too comfortable in the full back line, especially in the first half when Philip Austin and Hugh Coghlan carried the ball from deep. The pay-off for Tipp’s tactics of lying deep, however, was the amount of unchallenged possession afforded to a ball-playing centre half back like Mike McCarthy. The Kilcummin Rolls Royce was the starting point for most of Kerry’s first-half attacks and the All-Ireland champions monopolised possession far more than their 0-8 to 1-4 half time lead suggested, even into the stiffish breeze. Austin’s seventh minute goal for Tipperary, allied to their in-your-face approach, kept things interesting, and when Seamus Scanlon’s pass was intercepted in the early minutes of the second half to give Barry Grogan a levelling point, we momentarily sensed a gritty second period. Alas, for the neutrals, Sheehan’s close range finish in the 43rd minute allowed Kerry harvest a 1-12 to 1-6 lead that even Grogan’s fisted goal did little to threaten.

THE rest was window dressing for most of us, but there were others with points to prove. Barry John Keane, whose grandfather John Dowling captained Kerry to All-Ireland success 55 years ago, was introduced to Championship fare and snaffled a couple of points. Anthony Maher got some Championship minutes into his legs and Donncha Walsh put in an impressive shift which temporarily quells the debate over Kerry’s No 12 jersey. With 2-5, Sheehan looks to have franked his name on the No 15 jersey too, so the watching Conor Counihan can start plotting immediately for the side he will face in Killarney on June 6.

A year ago, Kerry discovered they weren’t ready for the power and purpose of Cork, but the management have taken steps to remedy their build up this time. “We have a better idea of what we’re at,” agreed O’Connor with a first-round game under his belt. “We can play better than this. At least lads know now they have to up the ante. Last year we coasted through the league and fellas had a false sense of security. We were well off the pace when we played Cork. At the moment, they look the team to beat. We’re going to have to up it big time in the next three weeks.” This time they’ll have a fit Donaghy, and Cork have a decision to make on who dislodges the ball from Kerry’s great oak. “It’s my favourite game, playing Cork in Killarney,” gushed Donaghy afterwards. “I can’t wait.” Nor can we.

Munster Junior Football Championship Quarter Final – Kerry 1-13 Tipperary 0-9

Kerry defeated Tipperary by 1-13 to 0-9 in the Munster Junior Football Championship Quarter Final on Sunday at Semple Stadium Thurles.

Kingdom rally to set up semi-final showdown with Cork

Kerry 1-13 Tipperary 0-9

By Jackie Cahill for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Monday, May 17, 2010

KERRY produced a strong second-half performance against Tipperary at Semple Stadium yesterday to book their place in the Munster JFC semi-finals. Inspired by centre forward Michael O’Donoghue and former senior star Aodán MacGearailt, the Kingdom set up a last-four showdown with champions Cork on June 6. Tipperary adopted a different approach to this year’s junior championship with the squad viewed as a development panel for the senior set-up, while all players on the squad were 25 years of age or younger.

But the Premier County must wait at least another year to end a winless streak in this competition which stretches back to 2003. Kerry, who were last crowned provincial champions in 2008, led by 1-5 to 0-6 at half-time before a run of five unanswered points after the break effectively sealed victory. Kerry struck early for their goal, with just eight minutes on the watch, as Michael Murphy fed the marauding O’Donoghue for a neat finish at the Killinan End. Tipp full forward Stephen Hahessy did well for the hosts in the first half, kicking three points from play, and the Carrick Swan forward saw an angled drive well saved by Kerry goalkeeper Seán Óg O Ciardubháin.

Alan O’Sullivan, a member of Kerry’s senior panel earlier this year, chipped in with a brace of scores from play in the opening half before the visitors turned up the heat during the second period. Tipp were outscored 0-8 to 0-3 after half-time and had goalkeeper Kieran Kenrick to thank for superb penalty save from MacGearailt with six minutes remaining. Kenrick, who won a Tipperary cup soccer medal with Clonmel Celtic on Saturday evening, did brilliantly to tip MacGearailt’s 11 metre effort over the crossbar. Kerry did have the benefit of a crossfield breeze in the second half of a scrappy tie which was pockmarked by frees awarded against both teams for misuse of the new hand pass rule, which is sure to cause further problems in the weeks to come.

Scorers for Kerry: M O’Donoghue 1-3 (0-2f), A MacGearailt 0-4 (2 45s), J Buckley & A O’Sullivan 0-2 each, M Murphy and G O’Driscoll 0-1 each.

Scorers for Tipperary: S Hahessy 0-3, T Hanly & T Egan (1f) 0-2 each, D Dwyer & L O’Gorman.

KERRY: S Óg O’Ciardubháin; S Enright, A Cahill, B McGuire; F Griffin, A Greaney, E O’Neill; G O’Driscoll, D Murphy; M Murphy, M O’Donoghue, A O’Sullivan; G Sayers, A MacGearailt, J Buckley.
Subs: E Hickson for Cahill (ht.), F Courtney for Sayers (49), B Poff for D Murphy (58), T McGoldrick for Buckley (59).

TIPPERARY: K Kenrick; D Buckley, R Power, D Lynch; D Bourke, D Dwyer, P O’Dwyer; D Heffernan, L O’Gorman; T Hanly, R O’Dwyer, L Coskeran; T Egan, S Hahessy, P McEvoy.

Referee: M Condon (Waterford)
