Kerry defeated Sligo by 1-12 to 0-14 in Round 3 of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Qualifiers on Saturday in Austin Stack Park Tralee.

Kerry were rattled to their core by Sligo before eventually escaping from Tralee with a one-point win in somewhat fortuitous circumstances. It was a thrilling GAA Round Three Qualifier clash, with Sligo missing a late penalty that would surely have seen them dump last year’s beaten finalists out of the competition. However, the Kingdom rode their luck and David Kelly’s late penalty was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Diarmuid Murphy.

Sligo went in search of an equaliser late in the game, but all too often their forwards made poor decisions and Kerry were able to hang on to keep their Championship campaign alive – just. The game was delayed by 20 minutes to allow more than 11,000 spectators filter safely into Austin Stack Park. Sligo managed to go in at the break with 1-6 to 0-7 lead after Kelly had scored an injury time goal. His initial shot was saved but he scuffed the rebound home from a tight angle.

Kerry, who played with the wind in the second half, led by two points in the 62nd minute after Bryan Sheehan landed a free. However, Sligo were handed a perfect opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot when Johnny Davey was hauled down in the square. But Kelly missed the kick, and despite another Sligo point from Kenneth Sweeney, Kerry hung on for the win.

Kerry play Sligo at 5:00pm on Saturday next in The All Ireland Championship Qualifiers. This game in Austin Stack Park Tralee is not a ticket game and all patrons can pay at the gate on the day.

The covered and uncovered stand is unreserved seating on a first come first served basis.

Match Preview

They meet for only the second time in championship history and for the first time since 1975 when Kerry beat Sligo by 3-13 to 0-5 in the All-Ireland semi-final in a game where John Egan scored 2-2 and Pat Spillane 1-1 for the runaway winners.
