Munster Minor Camogie Final – Clare 2-9 Cork 2-7

April 25, 2011 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Clare 2-09 Cork 2-07

Clare secured their third Munster Minor Camogie title in five years on Monday evening when producing a dramatic turnaround to edge out home side Cork by 2-9 to 2-7 in Mallow. Cork had battled hard and led for most of the game but never got more than a puck of the ball away from the visitors. This told in the end when Susan Fahy and Niki Kaiser were the heroes for the Banner, grabbing two last quarter goals to decisively swing the game in the visitors direction, as was Chloe Morey who played a captain’s role in scoring all nine points from placed balls.

This was the fifth successive minor final between the pair and it proved just as competitive as the previous offerings with never more than a puck of the ball separating the sides at any stage. Clare led by 0-5 to 0-3 approaching the interval but were undone by an Aoife Kiely goal that allowed the home side to hold a 1-4 to 0-5 advantage. Cork were value for this as there forward linne looked to have the Clare backs in trouble, while Clare would have been glad to hear the full time whistle as all their scores in the half had come from placed balls as they struggled to get past the Cork half back line.

A second goal in the 45th minute through Aine O’Donovan put Cork three points ahead but far from dropping their heads, Clare rallied and hit back immediately when Chloe Morey won a puck-out and picked out Susan Fahy on the wing who drove an effort to the net to level up the game.

Cork pushed ahead once more through a Katie Buckley point but by now, Clare were gathering momentum and they got their reward when Niki Kaiser seized upon a loose ball to drive her shot to the net from 20 metres. Chloe Morey extended Clare’s newfound lead to three in the 58th minute. Despite 2 glorious late opportunities for Cork’s Elaine Scally and Laura Burke points were what came of these attacked as Suzie O’Shea was very brave in the Clare net to challange the one coming players who were both one on one with the keeper but the chances were riffled over the bar, and Clare prevailed to take the silverware.
