Kennedy sets up rare win

Tipperary 2-09 Kerry 0-08

By Kieran McCarthy for the Irish Examiner web site

All-Ireland minor football champions Tipperary recorded their first win on Kerry soil since 1984 in the Munster MFC on Saturday night. After a poor first-half that saw Kerry lead 0-4 to 0-2 at Austin Stack Park in Tralee, a physically powerful and more experienced Tipperary blitzed the hosts in the second period, with Colman Kennedy grabbing a brace of goals to set-up a provincial semi-final against Cork next month.

Tipperary manager David Power said: “We have a very daunting task now to go down to Cork to play them on May 16. But it’s great for confidence to get a win down here in Kerry, our first here since 1984. “We are happy with the second-half performance. In the first half we were playing well up to the final third but we just weren’t showing our dominance on the scoreboard.” Colman Kennedy’s first goal came eight minutes into the second half, following good build-up play from Philip Quirke and Jason Lonergan, to push Tipperary ahead for the first-time (1-4 to 0-6).

By the time Kennedy bagged his second goal with 10 minutes left,Tipperary — dominant in midfield thanks to Quirke and Stephen O’Brien — had added points through Lonergan, impressive wing-back Bill Maher and Kennedy again to lead 2-7 to 0-6, while a disappointing Kerry struggled to make any impact. A low-point saw Tipp defender Kevin Fahey sent off midway through the second half after picking up two yellow cards. Kerry goalkeeper Stephen Cahillane saved a fourth-minute penalty from Tipp keeper Evan Comerford, while Kerry manager Mickey Ned O’Sullivan has promised to ring the changes for tomorrow night’s semi-final play-off away to Waterford (Fraher Field Dungarvan, 7pm).

Munster MFC: Tipp off to a flier in Tralee

Report from the Hogan Stand web site

Parading eight of last year’s All-Ireland winning side, Tipperary accounted for Kerry with surprising ease at Austin Stack Park, Tralee last night.

Tipperary 2-9 Kerry 0-8

The Kingdom played the last 20 minutes with 14 men, but Tipp were already on course for victory at that stage. Mickey Ned O’Sullivan’s charges were backed by a strong wind in the opening half, but only led by 0-4 to 0-2 at the break. Indeed, they were lucky not to be behind after goalkeeper Stephen Cahalane saved a penalty from his opposite number Evan Comerford.

Tipp took control on the resumption with two goals from corner forward Colman Kennedy, while wing back Bill Maher also caught the eye with two points. Tipp can expect a tougher test from Cork in the Munster semi-final on May 16, while Kerry must pick themselves up quickly for a losers’ group clash against Waterford in Dungarvan on Tuesday night.

Scorers –

Tipperary: C Kennedy 2-2 (0-2f), T J Ryan (0-1f), B Maher 0-2 each, J Lonergan, I Fahey and P Quirke 0-1 each

Kerry: N Sheehy (fs), D O’Se (0-1f) 0-2 each, K Murphy (45), A Barry, S Moloney and E O’Conchuir 0-1 each

Referee: J Bermingham (Cork)

Munster MFC first round

Tipperary 2-9 Kerry 0-8

Report from the Irish Independent newspaper

Reigning All-Ireland champions Tipperary had little difficulty in dismissing the feeble Kerry challenge despite having to play the last 20 minutes of the game with 14 men at Austin Stack Park, Tralee, last night. Tipperary, with eight of last year’s team, dominated in most sectors and wing-back Bill Maher was superb with two points. Tipperary had a penalty saved by Kerry ‘keeper Stephen Cahalane in the opening half when his opposite number Evan Comerford was denied, but Kerry’s 0-4 to 0-2 half-time lead was never going to be enough against the wind.

Tipp took over in the second period and two goals from corner-forward Colman Kennedy was enough to sink Kerry. Tipperary now advance to play Cork in the Munster semi-final, while Kerry travel to Waterford this Tuesday night in the losers round.

Scorers — Tipperary: C Kennedy 2-2 (0-2f), T J Ryan (0-1f), B Maher 0-2 each, J Lonergan, I Fahey and P Quirke 0-1 each. Kerry: N Sheehy (fs), D O’Se (0-1f) 0-2 each, K Murphy (45), A Barry, S Moloney and E O’Conchuir 0-1 each

Referee: J Bermingham (Cork)
