Munster GAA ESB MFC Final – Kerry vs. Tipperary

July 5, 2009 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Sherwood’s haul provides platform for comfortable Kerry victory

Kerry 0-12 Tipperary 0-6

Munster MFC final

From the Irish Independent newspaper

Monday July 06 2009

KERRY found little resistance from Tipperary as they claimed the Munster minor football title at Pairc Ui Chaoimh yesterday. John Kennedy’s side never trailed, having registered three points before Tipp got off the mark and lead by 0-8 to 0-1 at half-time. That lead could even have been more as the Kingdom had shot seven wides by the 20-minute mark, and though Tipp doubled their tally with three points in the last six minutes, it was little more than a consolation. Jack Sherwood was very impressive as he kicked four points from play, while corner-forward Eanna O’Connor, son of senior manager Jack, was on target with three frees, though Kerry will know that they must improve if further progress is to be made.

Far too often moves broke down through poor shooting, something that will be a concern for Kerry despite their dominance at midfield and the swift movement that Tipp’s defence found so troublesome. Tipperary, who were well beaten by the Kingdom in the first round before coming through the back door, never really threatened, and the fact that Johnny McMahon, a 44th-minute sub, was their top scorer with two frees tells its own story. Points from Thomas Hill and Liam Treacy for Tipp immediately after the interval gave brief signs of a comeback, but by the 50th-minute Kerry had extended the lead to 0-12 to 0-3 as the tempo wound down.

Scorers — Kerry: J Sherwood 0-4, E O’Connor 0-3(3fs), D O’Sullivan, S Carroll, D Kelly, I Galvin, N O’Shea 0-1 each.

Tipperary lose opening round game to O’Connor inspired Kingdom

Kerry 1-11 Tipperary 1-6

Eanna O’Connor maintained his rich vein of form when scoring 1-5 for holders Kerry in last night’s ESB Munster MFC first round win over Tipperary at Semple Stadium.

Fresh from scoring a last-gasp winning goal for Colaiste na Sceilge in last Saturday’s Hogan Cup final against St. Mary’s, Edenderry, the son of Kerry senior boss Jack O’Connor was once again in scintillating form as the Kingdom cruised into the semi-finals.

O’Shea, along with fellow full forwards Niall O’Shea and Donal O’Sullivan, scored their side’s combined first half total as the visitors took a 1-7 to 0-4 lead into the interval.

Tipperary scored just 1-1 from play over the 60 minutes with their goal coming from substitute Johnny McMahon in injury-time. Kerry paraded seven of Colaiste Na Sceilge’s All-Ireland Colleges winning side over the hour, and they showed no ill-effects as they advanced to a semi-final on May 13.

KERRY – P Sullivan; P O’Connor, P Galvin, N Fitzgerald; D Wrenn, J Hoare, M Finnegan; S Carroll 0-1, M Thiemann; J Sherwood, D Kelly, M Brennan; N O’Shea 0-2, E O’Connor 1-5, D O’Sullivan 0-3. Munster MFC Semi Final: Kerry see off wasteful Banner

14 May 2009

Kerry 2-10 Clare 1-4

An own goal by Clare wing back Seanie Malone early in the second half helped Kerry on their way to a flattering nine-point win in this ESB Munster MFC semi-final clash at Austin Stack Park.

The visitors, who opened the scoring through Cathal McInerney in the 10th minute, enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first half, but over-elaboration and wasteful finishing cost them dearly as Kerry went into the break ahead by 0-5 to 0-4.

Clare were still trailing by a point when disaster struck in the 34th minute when Kerry centre back Jeremy Hoare’s fisted effort rebounded off the post, only to hit the luckless Malone and cannon into the net.

The Kingdom then took control with points from Eanna O’Connor, Donal O’Sullivan and Michael Brennan, but Clare were handed a lifeline when Conor Ryan netted in the 47th minute. However, Kerry were not to be denied and a 56th minute goal from O’Connor sealed their place in the final against Tipperary for the second year-in-a-row.

Kerry – P O’Sullivan; M Galvin, P Galvin, N Fitzgerald; M Finnegan, J Hoare, D Wren; S Carroll 0-2, D Doody; I Galvin, J Sherwood 0-1, M Brennan 0-1; N O’Shea 0-1, E O’Connor 1-2, D O’Sullivan 0-2. Losers Final 25-4-09: Tipperary 1-15 Waterford 0-6 at Semple Stadium

TIPPERARY enjoyed a comprehensive 12-point victory over Waterford at Semple Stadium last night to revive their dreams of ESB Munster minor football championship glory.

Last year’s beaten finalists bounced back from their quarter-final reverse against holders Kerry to book a semi-final showdown with Cork on May 13.

Tipp were far too good for a disappointing Waterford in last night’s semi-final play off at Semple Stadium, a game played out in front of less than 200 spectators.

Billy Hewitt’s goal five minutes before half-time helped Tipp to lead by 1-8 to 0-2 at the break and toothless Waterford never looked like launching a second half fightback.

Tipp had managed just 1-1 from play against the Kingdom but this was a much improved attacking display as 1-8 was registered with five of the six starting forwards on target.

In contrast, Waterford scored just three points from play in the entire game and their night was summed up when Sam Lawless blasted over the crossbar from close range with just Aaron Wall to beat eleven minutes after half-time.

Wall did well twice in the first half to deny first Ian Galgaly and later Paul Whyte with good saves.

TIPPERARY: Aaron Wall; Graham Quinn, Jonathon Ryan, Paddy Dalton; Gerard Mulhaire, Darragh Dwyer, Luke Murphy; Jack Lonergan (0-1), Sean O’Meara; Thomas Hill (0-1), Ross McGrath (0-2), Rogers Peters (0-3, 2f); Aldo Matassa, Jonathon McMahon (0-6, 5f), Billy Hewitt (1-1).

SUBS: Liam Treacy (0-1) for Matassa (42), E Kendrick for O’Meara (39), Eoin Kent for Lonergan (58), B O’Hara for Mulhaire (60), J Ryan for Dwyer (60).

Munster MFC Semi Final: 4/5/09: Tipperary 0-13 Cork 0-10 a.e.t

Tipperary caused a major surprise last night when they recorded an extra-time victory over Cork in the ESB Munster MFC semi-final at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

The visitors recovered from losing a five-point lead in the second half of normal time to shock Mick Slocum’s much-fancied Cork side. Tipp set out their stall early on and raced into a 0-6 to 0-0 lead after 26 minutes. The impressive Billy Hewitt accounted for three of their early points, but Cork recovered somewhat late in the half to trail by 0-2 to 0-6 at the interval.

Though Brian Hogan got the first point of the second half to reduce the deficit to three, Tipp replied with points from Roger Peters, Ross McGrath and Thomas Hill to open up a 0-8 to 0-3 lead.

However, Cork – who survived a missed penalty by Ross McGrath in the 53rd minute – fought back and Dean Brosnan equalised to force extra-time.

But three unanswered points from McGrath in the first period of extra-time gave Tipp a 0-12 to 0-9 lead, and while Ger Minihane replied for Cork, substitute Johnny McMahon had the final say for the Premier County.

Last Munster Final Win for Tipperary 1995…………….July 23

Tipperary 2-6 Cork 0-10

Tipperary Minor footballers produced a display of quality, character and self belief in overcoming hot favourites, Cork, to claim their fifth munster minor football crown at Killarney.

The majority of the official attendance 43, 375 had come early to witness Tipp grab two first half goals from wing forward, Darren Owens followed by one from a penalty through Brian Maguire to enable Tipp take 2-2 to 0-5 half time lead.

Tipp were under severe pressure in the second half as their lead was reduced to one, twice during the half. However their defence, backed by a powerful display by former Tipp player and selector, Niall Kelly, were doing enough to hold out and on full time a Declan Browne point, his third of the hour, put Tipp on the road to victory when scenes of unparalled joy from a small Tipp following greeted the final whistle.

Tipp played against a slight breeze in the first half but Cork opened the scoring though a Declan Barrett free after three minutes. Paul Fitzgerald made a good save from Joe Deane at the other end as Kieran Connolly doubled Cork’s advantage on nine.

Paul Ormond was leading the way for Tipp at midfield and with the Tipp attack gaining more ball, it was important to see them rewarded. The reward came in the form of a goal from Darren Owens who wriggled his way through the Cork cover. Brian Maguire added a point before Liam Beale replied for the rebels.

Tipp continue to enjoy plenty chances in front of goal but over elaboration meant a poor return until Declan Browne secured a point from an acute angle. The lead increased to five when Brain Maguire slotted home a penalty after Terry Kearns was fouled on twenty minutes.

Cork looked in trouble but two points, the first from wing back, Anthony Lynch followed by another from Colm Crowley brought them back in touch as the half time whistle arrived.

On the restart, Cork reduced the margin with a Derek Browne free. Ballyporeen man, David Fogarty restored Tipp’s three point advantage and Brian Maguire increased the margin with a free out near the sideline.

But Cork were far from finished and three points on the trot from Derek Barrett, Joe Deane and substitute, Timmy McCarthy put the minimum between the sides. McCarthy almost had a goal but his thundering shot came back off the Tipp crossbar. Tipp held their nerve and a point by Declan Browne stemmed the tide. A free by Barrett brought Cork within one again with five minutes on the clock. Tipp continued to hold firm as Brendan McKeogh, Niall Kelly and Mark Cummins stood the test under a lot of Cork pressure and when Browne found the posts on full time it was relief for the Tipp side.

Full time score Tipp 2-6 Cork 0-10.

SCORERS: Tipp: B Maguire 1-2 (1gl =pen and 0-1 free); D Owens 1-0; D Browne 0-3; D Fogarty 0-1.

Last Tipperary Win Over Kerry ….. February 2, 2002

Tipperary 2-11 Kerry 2-9

It’s not a thrill we often enjoy in a county where the caman is king. Tipperary, enforced with six players from the North Division, beating Kerry in the big ball game, and doing it with one hell of a comeback that created a sensational end to this Munster Minor championship clash in Kilmallock on Saturday last.

For so long it seemed as if it was going to be the same old story. Kerry, banging home two goals in the first half and, sprinting off into an eight point lead by the 29th minute. At that stage it looked as if tradition would hold firm. Kerry looked as if they were destined for nothing more than a training session, Tipp for a thrashing.

Tipp looked as if their race was well and truly run by half time, when they trailed by 2-5 to 0-4. Even though they were winning as much possession as Kerry, the attack seemed devoid of the talent needed to notch up the necessary scores. Michael Dillon and Shane Ryan were the only ones to pose an element of danger in an otherwise languid sextet. A tendency to overplay the ball ruined many scoring opportunities.

In contrast, Kerry’s forwards were far more enterprising. Not least wing forward, Damien McCarthy, whose four points alone in the first half matched Tipp’s total tally for the period. Damien Casey’s goal from play in the 29th minute and Declan O’ Sullivan’s 17th successful penalty shot were due reward for a team that was playing direct and intelligent football. Even though Tipp enjoyed the advantage of a significant breeze from the resumption, only a chronic optimist would have predicted the events that were to unfold. For the first twenty minutes of the second half nothing suggested that the blue and golders could mount the kind of monumental effort required to test the rampant Kerry men.

Shane Ryan, an inspiring and powerful full forward, did strike three points in this period, but his efforts were cancelled out by Donnacha Walsh, Damien McCarthy and Declan O’ Sullivan. With only eleven minutes of normal time remaining, only a daft man would have said that Tipp would beat their opponents who were lording it, 2-8 to 0-7. But players, like the indefatigable Paudie Breen, never gave up trying. The Eire Og man was a revelation throughout, dominating the midfield exchanges. Breen’s hard work finally paid off when it resulted in Tipp’s first goal in the 40th minute. The Nenagh man’s long delivery found corner forward Conor O’Brien who dispatched the ball to Kilruane’s Stephen Murphy, whose powerful volley from short range shook the back of the net.

Murphy’s score was the tonic Tipperary needed. Every member of the team seemed to lift themselves to a new plane, beginning to play like men inspired. The whiff of an upset was in the air, and when Michael Dillon followed up with two points from frees the gap was down to just two points, 2-8 to 1-9. Colin O’ Connor attempted to put a halt to Tipperary’s gallop when he hit back with a point, but their gallop was too powerful. Tipp’s Michael Dillon soloed up field before dispatching the ball over the bar to narrow the gap again to two points with a minute of normal time remaining. Tipp fans breathed a collective sigh of relief when referee, Michael McCann, indicated that stoppages incurred throughout the game merited four minutes of extra time. Tipp pressed like a team possessed, and finally got their reward bang on 34 minutes when substitute, Ian Barnes stepped up to become hero of the day.

The Clonmel Commercials man, who had come on late in the second half for Newport’s Vincent Murphy, gathered a ball sent in towards the full forward line by wing back, Brendan Healy, blasting a sensational winning goal to the net. As if to prove that Tipperary’s resurgence was no temporary aberration, Michael Dillon followed up with another point from a free before the end to increase Tipperary’s advantage to two points.Other stoppages, and what seemed like an inordinate amount of time allowed by the referee, meant that the second half went on for forty minutes. A dumbfounded Kerry were kept scoreless for the last fourteen minutes.

Scorers: Tipperary: Michael Dillon, 0-6, 3 frees; Shane Ryan, 0-4, 1 free; Stephen Murphy, 1-1, 0-1 free; Ian Barnes, 1-0. Kerry: Damien McCarthy, 0-5, 1 free; Declan O’ Sullivan, 1-2, 1-0 penalty and 0-1 free; Damien Casey 1-0; Colin O’ Connor and Donnacha Walsh, 0-1 each.

Tipp minors give Kerry a fright

27 April 2006

Kerry……2-10

Tipperary…2-7

Kerry had to dig deep to get the better of a fired-up Tipperary team in the Munster minor football championship at Newcastle West on Wednesday night, April 26.

Tipp made the perfect start when David Keogh finished to the net after Kerry goalkeeper Tomas Mac an tSaoir had saved Brian Jones’ initial effort. The Kingdom had to wait until the 19th minute to open their account through Gary Sayers. Three minutes later, Paddy Curran – in his third year as a county minor – converted a penalty to put them in the driving seat.

Kerry did hit a purple patch which yielded points from David Moran, O’Driscoll, Curran and Sayers to lead by 1-6 to 1-2 at the break.

When James Doolan added a second Kerry goal in the 52nd minute, six points separated the sides. However, driven on by centre back Paddy Codd, Tipperary refused to throw in the towel and David Keogh’s second goal had the Kingdom hanging on for victory.

Scorers – Kerry: P Curran 1-2, J Doolan 1-1, G Sayers 0-3, D Moran 0-2, G O’Driscoll and E Kennedy 0-1 each. Tipperary: D Keogh 2-1, S Carey 0-3, D McCormack 0-2, T Dunne 0-1.

Munster Minor Final Meeting June 9 2006

Kerry 1-13 Tipperary 0-8

AN explosive 10-minute spell at the start of the second half saw Kerry finally overpower Tipperary to capture their first Munster minor football title in two years at Fitzgerald Stadium yesterday.

The switch of Tommy Walsh to midfield just before half time swung the game in Kerry’s favour as he assumed complete control to deliver a man of the match display.

Team captain Paddy Curran went to the forty and suddenly Kerry were a transformed side as they shredded a weaker Tipperary rearguard with power, pace and clinical finishing that settled the outcome in six minutes.

Kerry had struggled in the first half and led 0-5 to 0-4 despite playing with a strong wind and looked in trouble.

The game changed though in the opening seven minutes of the second half when Kerry scored 1-4 without reply, Gary Ayers netting for the Kingdom.

Curran and Patrick Curtin added points and by the 27th minute Kerry had raced 1-9 to 0-4 clear and the game was over a contest.

Tipp never gave up but were second best and despite a couple of Dalton frees, Kerry were just too strong and cruised to victory.

SCORERS – Kerry: P Curran 0-6 (0-3f), G Sayers 1-2, D Moran 0-2 (0-1f), G O’Driscoll, P Curtin, and J Doolan 0-1 each. Tipperary: T Dalton 0-5 (0-4f), S Carey 0-2f, M Doyle 0-1.

Curtin goals sink Tipp

12 April 2007 Kerry 3-7 Tipperary 0-10

A brace of first half goals from full forward Patrick Curtin helped holders Kerry to a 3-7 to 0-10 victory over Tipperary in their Munster MFC first round clash at the Gaelic Grounds on Wednesday night.

Last Year

ESB MUNSTER MINOR FOOTBALL FINAL 08

Tipperary 1-9 Kerry 1-9

By Liam Hogan

As a result of Conor Sweeney’s converted last minute free, Tipperary grabbed a draw after staging a late recovery in rain washed Pairc Ui Caoimh following an exciting minor final last Sunday.

The result means that the teams will meet in the replay next Saturday in Cusack Park, Ennis, a result that team manager, Philly Ryan was happy with

“We are delighted with the outcome, delighted with a draw. We thought we had a chance near the end. We were five points down but we knew we had the team to do it. We kept our head and our shape and we played ball and that’s what we have been doing all year, “said Philly.

The comeback was all the more remarkable as Tipp trailed Kerry by five points at half time 1-6 to 0-4 and both sides aadded two each to keep the same margin 1-8 to 0-6, with 23 minutes left. The scores dried up until a splendid goal by midfielder, Alan Moloney in the 48th minute sparked the revival. Tipp came level and six minutes remaining. A draw looked possible until Barry John Walsh got what looked like the winner with a splendid angled free out near the sideline.

Tipp raced back for the leveller and Sweeney played a captains part in forcing the sides to meet again.

This was a great performance by the Tipp side with the defence playing really well. Led by man of the match, Robert Kiely at centre back, the Tipp defence grew in confidence as the game progressed. The Arravale man had able assistance from returnee, Christophe Sheehan plus Conor Walsh on the wings. Both Alan Moloney and Peter Acheson combined well at midfield and such was the efforts from that five, that the Kerry midfield and half forward line were replaced over the hour.

Up front, Gavin Ryan was very good at centre forward while Conor Sweeney, David McGrath and Michael Dwyer had their moments.

The game itself was very stop-start, with a total of 59 frees awarded over the hour. Tipp got off to a good start with Conor Sweeney pointing after 22 seconds. Top Barry John Walsh on 1-6 (0-6 from frees) and son of former Kerry star, Sean Walsh, had the teams level on two minutes before Conor Sweeney put Tipp ahead with a twenty metre free.

Tipp showed early nerves and the Kerry side exploited their weakness with some defence splitting runs with one of those runs leading to a 10th-minute goal by Barry John Walsh when the full-forward finished a good move involving corner-forwards Paul Geaney and Cian Tobin.

Kerry stretched their lead with two more Walsh frees. Conor Sweeney then missed a 35 metre free but made up for the error, some minutes later. Barry John keane replied in similar fashion and centre forward, Mike Tim O’Sullivan edged them further ahead on 25 minutes.

Kerry sprang another enterprising move which led to another Walsh pointed free. Meanwhile, Tipp replaced Donnagh Heffernan with Eoin Fitzpatrick before the half finished on a more positive note for Tipp with Michael Dwyer getting on the scoresheet with a free.

Walsh added a free to Kerry on the restart. Tipp replied with frees from Dwyer and Sweeney before Paul Geaney put Kerry in a comfortable five point lead after 37 minutes.

An eleven minute barren spell accompanied by heavy rain, the game really came to life when Alan Moloney ghosted through the Kerry defence to goal with 11 minutes left put only two points between the sides.

Tipp then came level after points by Conor Sweeney and Michael Dwyer, but Walsh, who normally took his frees with his left boot, looked to have given Kerry the win after a brilliant free off his right boot and from out on the left wing.

However, Tipp got one more chance when a free was brought in for dissent and Sweeney made no mistake to ensure a second meeting.

The Tipperary manager suggested that his team would have liked better weather conditions and Kerry manager, and three times All-Ireland Medal winner, John Kennedy agreed.

“Conditions were poor for both teams. It was a battle. We could have won the game. There were a few chances there when we were four or five points up when we should have kicked a few points but we didn’t. Tipp got a chance to put away a goal and the imputeus grew in the last few minutes. I think a draw was a fair result in the end,” said John.

But the last word goes to Philly: “We didn’t get the victory. We were five points down at half time. We made a change before the break. Maybe we should have moved sooner. We know we are a better team but our performance, today, is a boost for Tipp football.

Munster Minor Football Final replay 2009

Kerry 2-12 Tipperary 0-8

By Liam Hogan

Tipperary may have lost the replay of the Munster Football final at Cusack Park Ennis last Saturday but they can in now way be disappointed with a rousing display against the might of the Kingdom.

No doubt this Kerry team were mighty relived to have escaped as they were in for a dog fight with this tenacious Tipp side. Tipp had lost of possession in the first twenty five minutes but two points from Conor Sweeney through frees was not enough in return for a Kerry side that never allowed any freedom of movement to the Tipp boys who were stifled by the concession of many frees.

The bright side of Kerry’s display was set by tar midfielder Wayne Guthrie whose fielding was a joy to watch. As a result the Kingdom, also helped by a stiff breeze, held a 0-5 to 0-1 lead by the 19th minute with the ability to convert chances in front of goal ensuring that a seven-point lead at the break, 0-9 to 0-2.

Moments after the re-start a legitimate claim for a foul on one of their Tipp attackers in front of the Kerry goal went unheeded and a subsequent Kerry defensive move ended up as a well taken goal by man-of-the-match Barry John Walsh at the other end.It sealed victory for Kerry and even though the Premier County boys proved competitive until the end, Kerry had too much in the tank. Tipp, to their credit, never gave up with great displays by Christopher Sheehan, Robert Kiely, Alan Moloney and Pater Acheson, the premier side kept their opponents scoreless for a 15-minute period.

Now Tipp will meet the losers of the Leinster final Meath or Offaly on the weekend August nine.

Last Munster Final Win 1995…………….July 23

Last Tipperary Win Over Kerry ….. February 2, 2002

Tipperary 2-11 Kerry 2-9

It’s not a thrill we often enjoy in a county where the caman is king.

Tipperary, enforced with six players from the North Division, beating
Kerry in the big ball game, and doing it with one hell of a comeback that
created a sensational end to this Munster Minor championship clash in Kilmallock
on Saturday last.

Tipp looked as if their race was well and truly run by half time, when they
trailed by 2-5 to 0-4. Even though they were winning as much possession
as Kerry, the attack seemed devoid of the talent needed to notch up the
necessary scores. Michael Dillon and Shane Ryan were the only ones to
pose an element of danger in an otherwise languid sextet. A tendency to
overplay the ball ruined many scoring opportunities.

In contrast, Kerry’s forwards were far more enterprising. Not least wing
forward, Damien McCarthy, whose four points alone in the first half
matched Tipp’s total tally for the period. Damien Casey’s goal from play in the
29th minute and Declan O’ Sullivan’s 17th successful penalty shot were due
reward for a team that was playing direct and intelligent football.

Even though Tipp enjoyed the advantage of a significant breeze from the
resumption, only a chronic optimist would have predicted the events that
were to unfold.

For the first twenty minutes of the second half nothing suggested that
the blue and golders could mount the kind of monumental effort required to
test the rampant Kerry men.

Shane Ryan, an inspiring and powerful full forward, did strike three
points in this period, but his efforts were cancelled out by Donnacha Walsh,
Damien McCarthy and Declan O’ Sullivan. With only eleven minutes of normal time
remaining, only a daft man would have said that Tipp would beat their
opponents who were lording it, 2-8 to 0-7.

But players, like the indefatigable Paudie Breen, never gave up trying.
The Eire Og man was a revelation throughout, dominating the midfield
exchanges. Breen’s hard work finally paid off when it resulted in Tipp’s first goal
in the 40th minute. The Nenagh man’s long delivery found corner forward
Conor O’Brien who dispatched the ball to Kilruane’s Stephen Murphy, whose
powerful volley from short range shook the back of the net.

Murphy’s score was the tonic Tipperary needed. Every member of the team
seemed to lift themselves to a new plane, beginning to play like men
inspired. The whiff of an upset was in the air, and when Michael Dillon
followed up with two points from frees the gap was down to just two
points, 2-8 to 1-9.

Colin O’ Connor attempted to put a halt to Tipperary’s gallop when he
hit back with a point, but their gallop was too powerful. Tipp’s Michael
Dillon soloed up field before dispatching the ball over the bar to narrow the
gap again to two points with a minute of normal time remaining.

Tipp fans breathed a collective sigh of relief when referee, Michael
McCann, indicated that stoppages incurred throughout the game merited four
minutes of extra time. Tipp pressed like a team possessed, and finally got their
reward bang on 34 minutes when substitute, Ian Barnes stepped up to
become hero of the day.

The Clonmel Commercials man, who had come on late in the second half for
Newport’s Vincent Murphy, gathered a ball sent in towards the full
forward line by wing back, Brendan Healy, blasting a sensational winning goal to
the net.

As if to prove that Tipperary’s resurgence was no temporary aberration,
Michael Dillon followed up with another point from a free before the end
to increase Tipperary’s advantage to two points.

Other stoppages, and what seemed like an inordinate amount of time
allowed by the referee, meant that the second half went on for forty minutes. A
dumbfounded Kerry were kept scoreless for the last fourteen minutes.

Scorers: Tipperary: Michael Dillon, 0-6, 3 frees; Shane Ryan, 0-4, 1
free; Stephen Murphy, 1-1, 0-1 free; Ian Barnes, 1-0. Kerry: Damien McCarthy,

ESB MUNSTER MINOR FOOTBALL FINAL 08

Tipperary 1-9

Kerry 1-9

Man of the match, Robert Kiely (Tipperary).

SCORERS: Tipperary: C Sweeney 0-6 (0-3f), A Moloney 1-0, M Dwyer 0-3 (0-2f).

Munster Minor Football Final replay 2009

Kerry 2-12

Tipperary 0-8

Moments after the re-start a legitimate claim for a foul on one of their
Tipp attackers in front of the Kerry goal went unheeded and a subsequent
Kerry defensive move ended up as a well taken goal by man-of-the-match
Barry John Walsh at the other end.

It sealed victory for Kerry and even though the Premier County boys
proved competitive until the end, Kerry had too much in the tank.

Tipp, to their credit, never gave up with great displays by Christopher Sheehan, Robert Kiely, Alan Moloney and Pater Acheson, the premier side kept their opponents
scoreless for a 15-minute period.

Now Tipp will meet the losers of the Leinster final Meath or Offaly on the weekend August nine.
