Harty Cup Quarter-Final
Hamilton Hight School 1-11 Ardscoil Rís 1-16
Ardscoil Rís continued their march towards a fourth Harty Cup crown in six years when dismissing the brave challenge of Hamilton High School Bandon in this quarter-final clash. Yesterday’s heated encounter was a repeat of last year’s semi-final, a fixture Ardscoil Rís romped home 2-14 to 1-4, and while this latest instalment was far from one-sided, the holders never looked in any danger of emerging second best at Charleville.
Having toiled against the elements in the first period, Ardscoil still returned to the dressing room with their noses in front, 0-8 to 0-7. It was a lead they would never relinquish, 1-4 without reply during a six-minute burst midway through the second-half proving the game’s crucial period.
A Sean O’Donovan goal seven minutes out provided the Bandon students with a flicker of hope, but they were unable to make any further inroads. A meagre tally of 1-1 during the final 23 minutes highlighted Hamilton’s second-half struggles, a late injury to midfielder Luke Meade compounding their woes.
“We are relieved to get through, we ground it out in the end,” said Ardscoil Rís selector Niall Moran. “Conditions weren’t for fast hurling, but luckily enough we got the goal at the right time. Momentum is huge on a day like today. We got a kick from the goal and we drove on from there.”
Little or nothing separated the sides during the early exchanges and the contest was level on no fewer than five occasions in the first period. Four points inside the opening 18 minutes from Bandon full-forward Eoin O’Reilly, added to a Chris O’Leary free, settled the Cork outfit, but, even at this early stage, it was clear Ardscoil Rís carried a greater overall balance.
Half-forward Michael Mackey proved tormentor-in-chief, hitting three first-half points, with Ronan Lynch (0-2 frees), Conor Holihan (0-1 free), Conor Boylan and the impressive Aaron Gillane all finding the target. Their interval advantage could have been far more substantial was it not for the intervention of the crossbar and a fine double-save from Hamilton keeper Cathal Dart-O’Flynn.
Placed ball efforts from O’Leary and O’Reilly, accentuated by a fine Colm Dineen effort, levelled matters at 0-10 apiece on 37 minutes. With proceedings delicately poised, now was Hamilton’s time to strike. They didn’t, and tradition shone through in the ensuing passages of play.
Ronan Lynch, set-up by Peter Casey, pounced for an Ardscoil Rís goal on 45 minutes. Casey (0-2), Gillane and Mackey splits the posts subsequently and the gap stretched to seven. O’Donovan’s goal cut the deficit momentarily, but Gillane and Mackey would ensure Ardscoil Rís had the final say.

Champions Ardscoil Ris book Harty Cup semi-final spot
by Jerome O’Connell for the Limerick Leader newspaper
CHAMPIONS Ardscoil Ris continued on the defence of their Harty Cup title this Monday when booking an eighth successive semi-final spot thanks to a 1-16 to 1-11 win over Bandon’s Hamilton High School. This five point quarter-final victory in Charleville books a January 31 semi-final with Cork’s Rochestown.
The all-important score came in the game’s 44th minute when Ardscoil Ris captain Ronan Lynch rattled the Bandon net. That put Limerick’s North Circular Road secondary school into a 1-10 to 0-10 lead entering the final quarter of this Munster senior A Post Primary Schools encounter.
The three-time champions restricted their Cork opponents to just 1-1 in the final 25-minutes, which was the period that decided the tight encounter. Bandon’s Hamilton High School had the wind in the opening 30-minutes but trailed 0-8 to 0-7 at half time. Ardscoil Ris had Mikey Mackey in fine form in that opening half with three points from play.
At the other end of the field Eoin O’Reilly troubled Ardscoil Ris with three points of his own, but not conceded a first half goal was important for the Limerick side. Indeed Niall Moran’s side went closest to a first half goal with Mackey and Conor Boylan both denied in the 22nd minute. The early minutes of the second half were again tit-for-tat with Peter Casey and Aaron Gillane among the Ardscoil Ris scorers.
Then Ardscoil moved Ronan Lynch from centre back to midfield and profited within minutes when he raced onto a handpass from Casey to fire to the net. Casey, Gillane and Mackey all added quick points to the goal and all of a sudden Ardscoil were 1-13 to 0-10 clear with 10-minutes to play.
Bandon did hit back in the 52nd minute with a fine Sean O’Donovan goal but Ardscoil’s lead was sufficient to hold out. Castletroy College will bid to join Ardscoil in the semi-final on Wednesday when they play Youghal in Cahir in their quarter-final.
Scorers: Ardscoil Ris: Mikey Mackey 0-5, Ronan Lynch 1-2 (0-2 frees), Aaron Gillane 0-4, Peter Casey 0-3, Conor Houlihan (free) and Conor Boylan 0-1 each. Bandon: Eoin O’Reilly 0-6 (3frees), Chris O’Leary 0-3 (2frees), Sean O’Donovan 1-0, Darragh Curran and Colm Dinneen 0-1 each.

Ardscoil Ris put Harty Cup title on the line: CHAMPIONS Ardscoil Ris bid to reach an eighth successive Harty C… http://t.co/AkT3dVeKYI
— Limerick Leader (@Limerick_Leader) January 19, 2015
February 9th 2013 is a significant date in the history of the Dr. Harty Cup competition this decade. On that date, Our Ladys Templemore recorded a 1-13 to 0-14 victory over Ard Scoil Ris of Limerick in a Semi-Final Replay. The significance? That game remains the only knockout Harty Cup fixture which Ard Scoil Ris have lost since 2010. This amazing record of dominance has seen the Limerick school being crowned champions in 3 of the last 4 competitions played (2010/2011, 2011/2012 & 2013/2014). Despite losing to Thurles CBS in the group stages before Christmas in October, Ard Scoil Ris have refocused and are back again in a Quarter-Final looking for further success. Led by Ronan Lynch and a handful of other county minors from Limerick & Clare, this is a strong Ard Scoil Ris side which will take beating now that the action has heated up as we reach the knockout stages.
Hamilton High School Bandon on the other hand come in to this game as only one of two teams to win all their games thus far in the competition, coming through a tough Group 4 campaign with four wins from four. Their one point win over a Midleton CBS team fancied to win their group illustrated their pedigree, a game in which they not only came from behind to secure victory but also saw 9 different players contribute to their tally of 2-16 which demonstrates a balance to their team which will be an important attribute against the defending champions. The Bandon school are in good form up front, scoring 13 goals in four games en route to recording an average aggregate score of 22.75 points per game. Anything approaching that tally will see them progress to the semi-finals for the second consecutive year.
