High School Clonmel 2-12 St. Francis College Rochestown 1-11

Clonmel High School with a very good performance had 4 points to spare over St Francis College Rochestown in the Corn Ui Mhuiri at Glanworth on Wednesday.

The South Tipperary side had the aid of the stiff breeze in the opening half. They were quick to get on top in the half back line and midfield sectors. Good play by Eoin Hoctor led to a first minute point by Mark Keogh. In the 3rd minute Keogh soloed through and kicked a great goal. Michael Hogan added two points before the City side had their opening score a pointed free by James Holland in the 9th minute. The winners continued to do well. Shane O’Meara pointed a free. St Francis had their 2nd score in the 13th minute when Nathan Walsh put Kevin O’Donovan through. Three rapid points by Michael Hogan, Mark Keogh and Jake Mulcahy opened up an 8 point lead 1-7 to 0-2 by the 20th minute.

St. Francis had a free by James Holland well saved by Aidan Tobin. Impressive Calvin Boland cut through and scored a great point. In the 23rd minute good play by Eoin Hoctor and Michael O’Reilly led to a well executed point by Michael Barlow. Rochestown came close to a goal in the 28th minute when Kevin O’Donovan put Liam Grainger through, Clonmel keeper Aidan Tobin saved with the rebound coming off the crossbar and cleared to safety. In injury time Michael O’Reilly pointed for the winners. Deep in injury time St Francis keeper Cian Denn made a very good save from Shane O’Meara. At the interval High School led 1-10 to 0-2.

Rochestown who introduced Shane Kingston and Jack Lyons got off to a good start on the changeover. Matthew McAuliffe pointed and the same player set up Sean Powter for a goal in the 33rd minute. Eoin Hoctor pointed for Clonmel with James Holland (free) and Shane Kingston closing the gap with points 1-11 to 1- 5.

The decisive score came in the 38th minute when Michael O’Reilly got onto a delivery that appeared to be going wide but was held by the wind before crossing the end line. O’Reilly unmarked made no mistake with a vital goal that put his side 2-11 to 1-5 clear. Jack Lyons followed with a Rochestown point. Shane O’Meara replied with a pointed free that had Clonmel double scores ahead 2-12 to 1- 6 with 13 minutes to go. St Francis made a massive recovery dominating the final quarter. They had five points in this period by Sean Powter, James Holland, Evan Ryall, Matthew McAuliffe and Shane Kingston. The High School defence held firm with Kyle Peters, Gavin Ryan, and Jake Mulcahy making some great clearances under pressure. The final whistle followed and High School were victorious and are now through to the knockout stages.
