Bord Gais Energy Munster GAA Awards 2013
The Bord Gais Energy Munster GAA Awards 2013 took place on Saturday December 7th at the Malton Hotel, Killarney.
Senior Winners and Manager of the Year Announced for 2013 Bord Gáis Energy Munster GAA Awards
Limerick hurler, Richie McCarthy, Kerry’s James ‘Donoghue and Clare Senior Hurling Manager Davy Fitzgerald were today named the top winners of the Bord Gáis Energy Munster GAA Awards 2013. The awards will be presented on Saturday night at a gala dinner in the Malton Hotel in Killarney where over 30 players, officials and legends will receive accolades.
Limerick’s Full Back Richie McCarthy was outstanding for this year’s Munster Hurling Champions. He’s made the full back position his own in the last couple of seasons since making his championship debut in 2011.
Kerry’s James O’Donoghue has been selected as the Senior Footballer of the year. The Killarney Legion man has burst on the scene this year winning an All Star in his first full championship season.
Meanwhile Davy Fitzgerald was named Manager of the Year for his leadership of the Clare All Ireland Winning Senior Hurling Team. Davy’s management style is based on building huge passion and commitment amongst his players and his achievement in leading the Clare men to their first All-Ireland success since 1997 makes him a worthy winner.
Speaking on the announcement of these winners, Bord Gáis Energy Managing Director David Kirwan said: “I am delighted that the hard work and achievements of both James O’Donoghue and Richie McCarthy has been recognised. Both players have been outstanding for their respective counties over the last few years. And I would also like to congratulate Davy Fitzgerald on his well-deserved award for his exceptional achievements and work as manager to the Clare Senior Hurling team”.
Also speaking on the announcement of these awards Robert Frost, Chairman of Munster GAA said “Richie McCarthy and James O’Donoghue contributed hugely to their teams march through Munster to secure titles for Limerick and Kerry respectively. The success of a young Clare team in winning All-Ireland Senior honours following a memorable hurling season is testament to the leadership of Davy Fitzgerald and he is a deserving winner of Manager of the Year”

Camogie, Ladies Football and Handball Winners Announced for 2013 Bord Gáis Energy Munster GAA Awards
Limerick star Michelle Casey has been announced as the winner of the Camogie Award for the 2013 Bord Gáis Energy Munster GAA Awards. The Limerick team captain, who led her county to the All-Ireland Intermediate Final this year will be awarded her prize at the awards ceremony which is taking place in the Malton Hotel, Killarney on Saturday, 7 December.
Another player to be honoured in ladies GAA is Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, part of the Kerry team who won their first Munster Championship in a decade and a 2013 All Star. She has been named as the recipient of the Ladies Football Award for 2013.
Meanwhile the Handball Award went to Clare’s Colin Crehan who is the current Minor Singles and Doubles All Ireland Champion.
Ger Cunningham, Sports Ambassador with Bord Gáis Energy commented:: “Michelle Casey has led Limerick with distinction this year as a rock at centre-back while Kerry All Star Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh was in devastating form when the Kingdom won their first Munster Championship in a decade.”
Munster GAA Chairman Robert Frost said “I would like to congratulate Michelle, Louise and Colin on their well-deserved awards following their outstanding displays during 2013“.
Hall of Fame Winners Announced for 2013 Bord Gáis Energy Munster GAA Awards – Kerry and Waterford Legends to join elite band
Waterford hurling hero John Galvin and Kerry footballing legend Mike Sheehy are the latest Munster legends to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, it was announced today. The two greats will receive their awards at the Bord Gáis Energy Munster GAA Awards Gala Dinner on Saturday, December 7 in the Malton Hotel, Killarney.
Waterford and Portlaw’s John Galvin was the first Decies All Star ever in 1974 and repeated the feat in 1982. The son of All-Ireland-medal winner Willie Galvin, his county career started in the 1972 championship and he became a regular player until his retirement at the end of the 1986 championship. He won five county championship medals with Portlaw during that time.
Kerry footballer Mike Sheehy is one of the most decorated players of all time, winning a record equalling Eight All Ireland Senior medals, Seven All Star Awards and 11 Munster Championships. The Austin Stacks man played 45 Championship games for Kerry scoring a massive 29 goals and 205 points in the process.
The two join the fellow GAA greats in the Hall of Fame including Gerald McCarthy, Paudie Lynch , Seamus Durack, Eamon Cregan and Mick O’Dwyer.
Commenting on the announcement of the Hall of Fame winners for 2013, Ger Cunningham, Sports Ambassador with Bord Gáis Energy said: said: “Mikey Sheehy is one of the most famous names in Football while John Galvin gave many years of sterling service to Waterford hurling. It’s fitting that they are inducted into such an illustrious group.”

Other 2013 winners also announced today are Paddy Finucane of Tiipperary who won the Media Award; Michael Keane of Cork, Services to Refereeing; Liam Hodnett, Cork, Services in Education Award; Padraig Mac Mathúna,, of Clare, Distinguished Service Award; Tipp’s Darragh Egan won the Intermediate Hurling Award and Ruari Deane of Cork won the Junior Football Award.
Under 21 and Minor Winners Announced for 2013 Bord Gáis Energy Munster GAA Awards
Four Counties shared the spoils in the Bord Gáis Energy Munster GAA Minor and U21 Awards for 2013, it was announced today, with winners in Cork and Kerry in football and Limerick and Clare in hurling.
Kerry’s Jack Savage took the Minor Football Award in his second year at that level. He scored ten of the Kingdom’s 15 points in the Munster Final defeat of Tipperary, Kerry’s first Munster Minor success since 2009.
Meanwhile, Limerick’s Ronan Lynch was the equivalent winner in hurling as part of the Treaty’s Munster Championship winning side.
At Under 21 level, Brian Hurley of Cork took the Football Award. The Business student from Union Hall was Cork’s top scorer in the 2013 All Ireland campaign with 2-18 to his name including 1-4 in the All Ireland Final as well as a further 1-13 in the senior ranks.
And All Ireland hurling-winning Clare centre-fielder, senior All Star and and Bord Gais Energy Under 21 Team of the Year shoe-in Colm Galvin completed the quartet.
Speaking on the announcement of the Under 21 and Minor winners for 2013, Bord Gáis Energy Managing Director David Kirwan said: “There is some amazing talent coming through at U21 and Minor level in GAA and it is fitting that we are recognising our future GAA stars at the Bord Gáis Energy Munster GAA Awards which also honours GAA legends, past and present. All of these recipients are already gracing the senior ranks and I wish both the U21 and Minor winners for 2013 long and successful careers in their respective sports.”
Also speaking on the announcement of these awards Robert Frost, Chairman of Munster GAA said: ‘’The Minor and Under 21 players being honoured made significant contributions during this year’s underage championship’s which were played at a high standard”.
The awards will be presented at Gala dinner at the Malton Hotel in Killarney on Saturday, December 7th.
