O Lionain magic puts paid to Carlow

Report from the Irish Independent newspaper

Waterford 0-15 Carlow 0-10

A storming finish saw 14-man Waterford round off their campaign with a win at Dr Cullen Park. Niall Carew’s side were down to 14 men after 30 minutes when Shane Aherne received a second yellow. But the hosts could only muster a single point from play in the half as they led 0-5 to 0-4 at the break. It was point for point for much of the second half – after 55 minutes the sides were tied at 0-8 each. But in the closing stages the pace of Waterford’s Liam O Lionain provided major problems. Carlow simply folded as Waterford hit a succession of points. Deise manager Carew was very pleased to have finished the campaign with a win. Carlow counterpart Anthony Rainbow said his focus was now on the Leinster SFC clash with Westmeath on May 19.

Round-up from the GAA.ie web site

Waterford secured their third win of the 2013 campaign with a five-point defeat of Carlow in Dr. Cullen Park on Sunday. Remarkably, both sides went into the game on the back of four successive defeats after starting the season with two victories. Carlow led by 0-5 to 0-4 at the break and looked on course for victory as the Déise were down to 14 men, with Shane Ahearne sent off for two yellow card offences.

However, Waterford produced an excellent second half display, moving 0-9 to 0-8 ahead after 55 minutes, and with Gary Hurney amongst the scorers in the closing stages, secured a deserved five-point win. The win lifts the Déise to sixth in the table, while Anthony Rainbow’s charges finished a disappointing second from bottom after such a promising start to the year.
