Gaining confidence from a fifth-minute goal from man-of-the-match Paul Broderick, Carlow went on to record a convincing nine-point win over a listless Waterford side in this clash of counties in mid-table of Division 4 of the NFL at Netwatch Cullen Park on Saturday night.

Although there was nothing but pride at stake the game was illuminated by the predatory Broderick, who finished with a commendable tally of 2-6, 2-2 from play. That early goal separated the sides at half-time as Carlow led 1-5 to 0-5.

Waterford could only muster two second-half points, firstly from a Donie Breathnach free and one from play by captain Paul Whyte. Each side had a midfielder black carded in the second half with Waterford’s Michael Curry sidelined on 50 minutes to be followed 10 minutes later by Brendan Murphy. The result saw Carlow leapfrog the visitors in the league table, with two wins and a draw in Westmeath now to their credit.
