Waterford produced a sensational second-half comeback to rescue a dramatic draw against Tipperary in a Munster SHC classic at Walsh Park, with Kevin Mahony’s goal from the final puck securing a deserved share of the spoils.

Tipperary, the All-Ireland champions, looked set to end their long wait for a Munster win at Walsh Park after a dominant first half. Though Calum Lyons opened the scoring for Waterford, Tipp quickly seized control with six unanswered points. Darragh McCarthy, Andrew Ormond, John McGrath, Sam O’Farrell, Willie Connors and Alan Tynan all impressed as the visitors exposed Waterford’s defensive frailties.

Despite occasional flashes from Stephen Bennett, Sean Walsh and Jamie Barron, Waterford struggled badly. Tipp’s attack was relentless, with Oisin O’Donoghue causing huge problems and Ormond striking for a crucial first-half goal after John McGrath’s brilliance carved open the defence.

Waterford began to dominate possession and intensity. Sean Mackey, Calum Lyons and Jack Prendergast all contributed key scores as the margin shrank rapidly. Bennett then delivered a moment of magic, weaving through defenders before rattling the net in the 54th minute to ignite Walsh Park.

Hutchinson and Bennett continued to drive Waterford forward, with Bennett eventually leveling the match for the first time since the opening minutes. Waterford even surged ahead entering the final stages, with Bennett’s brilliance putting them two points clear, an extraordinary turnaround from their half-time position.

But Tipperary showed championship mettle of their own. Darragh Stakelum, Eoghan Connolly and O’Donoghue responded superbly, before late scores from Stefan Tobin, Jason Forde and Ronan Maher appeared to have snatched victory for the visitors in added time.

Yet Waterford refused to surrender. With one final attack, Billy Nolan launched the ball forward, Bennett secured possession, and Kevin Mahony finished emphatically to the net, sending the packed Walsh Park crowd into raptures and sealing an unforgettable draw.

In the end, both teams emerged with their championship ambitions still alive after a breathtaking contest that will be remembered as one of Walsh Park’s great Munster battles.
