GAA Rounders Junior Women's All-Ireland Final

Description:

History was made on Sunday as GAA Rounders staged its first-ever Women’s Finals Day at the GAA National Games Development Centre in Abbotstown, Dublin, with two Limerick clubs contesting the Junior Women’s All-Ireland Final.

St. Kieran’s of Ardagh and St. Senan’s of Foynes shared the distinction of participating in the first all-Limerick pairing in an All-Ireland Rounders Final. The occasion was marked by a colourful pre-match atmosphere as both teams were welcomed onto the pitch through a guard of honour of club flags, accompanied by music chosen by the finalists.

Following the singing of the National Anthem by St. Kieran’s player Máire Dinneen, the decider got underway with Jay Hall of Galway City Rapparees taking charge.

The teams were evenly matched throughout a closely contested encounter. Four runs apiece in the opening innings reflected the competitive nature of the contest, while St. Senan’s moved ahead after scoring a further four runs in the second inning and restricting their opponents to leave the score at 8-4.

St. Kieran’s responded impressively. Strong fielding prevented St. Senan’s from extending their lead before an outstanding batting display yielded six runs and swung the momentum in favour of the Ardagh club, who moved 10-8 ahead entering the final inning.

With the title on the line, St. Senan’s required two runs to level the contest and force an additional batting opportunity for St. Kieran’s. Louise Kelly successfully crossed home base, but St. Kieran’s defence held firm to prevent any further scores and secure a hard-fought 10-9 victory.

The win delivered the Junior Women’s All-Ireland title to St. Kieran’s and crowned a memorable day for Limerick Rounders on the national stage.

St. Kieran’s centre outfielder Sandra Walsh was named Player of the Match after an influential performance that included several excellent catches in the field as well as two runs scored.

St. Kieran’s Team Captain, Emma Galvin, was presented with the trophy by GAA Rounders President Paula Doherty.
