Waterford show no mercy in comfortable Munster Hurling League victory over Kerry

Waterford 6-25 Kerry 0-6

Report by Jordan Norris for the Irish Independent newspaper

A ruthless Waterford delivered a dominant performance on a wet and windy night in Dungarvan, sweeping Kerry aside by 37 points as they ran out emphatic winners in the Munster Hurling League.

Peter Queally’s side were in complete control from the outset, with goals from Charlie Treen (two), Patrick Curran, James Power, Seamus Fitzgerald and debutant Tholom Guiry underlining a one-sided contest. Reuben Halloran opened the scoring with an early free before Waterford struck their first goal inside three minutes, Power finishing confidently after good work by Fitzgerald.

Points from Tom Barron, Curran and Halloran quickly extended the Déise lead, and a second goal arrived on nine minutes when Curran reacted fastest to a rebound after Diarmuid Quirke had saved Fitzgerald’s initial effort. Kerry briefly responded through Kevin Goulding and Liam Óg O’Connor, but Waterford maintained their grip, with Halloran to the fore once again.

Guiry marked his debut in style on 21 minutes, firing home Waterford’s third goal, and scores from Sean Mackey and Halloran helped establish a commanding 3-9 to 0-5 lead at the interval.

Any hope of a Kerry revival vanished early in the second half as Waterford hit an unanswered 3-17. Mackey set up Treen for goal number four, Fitzgerald added a fifth moments later, and Treen struck again as the Déise ran riot. Halloran’s accuracy from frees, points from Guiry, Jamie Barron and substitutes Evan Spellman, and another Fitzgerald score completed the rout.

A late Ivan Conway free spared Kerry from a scoreless second half, but it was little consolation on a night dominated entirely by Waterford.
