Munster MHC round 3: Tipperary 0-18 Limerick 2-13
Second-half goals from Rian Horgan and super-sub Killian Begley fired Limerick to a first Munster MHC victory in nine attempts with a battling Semple Stadium success.
The Treaty never led through the first 42 minutes of this encounter until the goal from Begley, son of former dual player Brian, who also added the stoppage-time insurance point.
For Tipp, it marks a third lead lost in the closing stages for one-score defeats.
Neither of these sides had registered a win from two previous outings but with the top four counties progressing to the All-Ireland series, victory here was key to extending their summer.
It made for a jittery first seven minutes on a slippery surface until the first flag was raised.
Chris Dunne showed commendable character for shaking off an early missed free to light up Semple Stadium with the next four Tipp points, all from play. Hard-working midfielder Shane Cooney provided much of the supply.
Limerick kept in touch with scores from Rory Hanly, Shane Waters (free), and Cathal Dennehy. Paul Murphy almost pushed them ahead but his overhead flick rolled wide of the far post.
Tipp’s Dylan Hennessy and Jaye Cilvinas picked off fine points from play, cancelled out by Waters’ free and David O’Keeffe.
Tipp began to stretch away approaching half-time with two Dunne frees and a Euan Murray brace for a double-scores lead of five.
Dennehy pulled one back before Murphy threatened goal again from a 40-metre solo run. Patrick McCormack’s save kept it 0-10 to 0-6 at the break.
He couldn’t keep out their next effort in the 35th minute as Horgan poached upon Seán Óg Cahill Hayes’s dropping shot to drill home. Seconds later, Dennehy’s third brought the sides level. Conall Morrisson and Waters traded points to leave the teams on par for a fifth and final time.
Well-worked sidelines resulted in points for Zach O’Keeffe and Morrisson but Limerick grabbed their first lead in the 43rd minute. Begley went on a rampaging run before rifling to the bottom corner for a 2-8 to 0-13 lead.
Four Waters frees against two from Dunne buttressed that advantage. Limerick had some complaints, however, that play was called back for one of those fouls before Dennehy sent the sliotar to the net.
Two more Dunne frees brought up a personal tally of 0-10 and narrowed the gap to the minimum with half of the four added minutes played.
But Begley provided the cushion and Conor Kennedy’s point proved too little, too late.
