Munster Minor Football Championship: Clare 1-22 Waterford 1-10
Conor Burke kicked a sensational 17 points off left and right as the Clare minor footballers made it back to back Munster championship wins under the shadow of the Comeragh mountains. The Kilmurry Ibrickane attacker has accounted for 0-29 in just two games.
“Conor is an outstanding young fella,” manager Joe Hayes claimed afterwards. “A real leader. His tackling off the ball has upped from last year which is important. He kicked 17, I think he had two wides. A real good guy around the group. He won’t come out of here with a swelled head or anything like that.”
The Banner corner forwards scored 1-21 between them in a pillar to post victory. Cathal McNamara notched 1-4 from play including an opportunistic goal. High fielder Donncha O’Dwyer also stood out at number eight.
After a chastening opening half, the Waterford fans had something to shout about in the second. Aaron Curran billowed the net while Tom Lynch, Jake Kearney and Paul Bagnall also threatened up front. They outscored Clare in that second period but a second defeat was inevitable from early on.
Burke had ten points to his name by half time (seven frees and three from play). In the ninth minute, Darragh Walsh’s short kickout was intercepted by Cathal McNamara who crashed the ball home. With Donncha O’Dwyer plucking high balls at midfield, the Banner were utterly dominant. Waterford had a let off when Eoin Murphy volleyed wide. A pair of two point frees from Burke made it 1-10 to 0-0. Wing back Ajay Daly burst forward to strike one from play.
It took 26 minutes for the Déise to land a score via midfielder Ronan O’Hora. Substitute Paul Bagnall struck another before the break but the Banner went in thirteen points up (1-12 to 0-2).
The first Waterford roar of the evening went up on 40 minutes when Aaron Curran gathered a high ball from O’Hora and rattled the far corner. Despite an encouraging second half display, nine points was as close as the Déise got.
A McNamara two pointer ended any hopes of a home comeback. Burke raised five more white flags in the dying embers.
