Dalton red the only blemish as Cork breeze past Wexford in league opener
Report by John Fogarty for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Allianz NHL Division 1A: Wexford 0-12 Cork 2-21
A soft evening by the Slaney in more ways than one for Cork as they eased their way into the season with this 15-point win.
The visit of Limerick next Saturday should be an entirely different prospect but here they made light work of an understrength Wexford side in this Division 1A encounter in Chadwicks Wexford Park.
Brian Hayes was superb in a first half Cork won by 1-12 to 0-5 and Declan Dalton’s penalty goal won by himself in the 40th minute and converted two minutes later ensured there was no coming back for Wexford even with the elements in their favour.
Conor Foley was also black carded for the penalty foul on Dalton and Cork made use of the numerical advantage with the next three points to go 15 clear in the 46th minute.
The difference was 14 in the 53rd minute when Dalton and Rory O’Connor were shown straight cards for an altercation where at least one punch was thrown. It was the second successive game O’Connor was shown the line after his double yellow card offence in last year’s All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Clare.
The game played itself out to its predictable conclusion although Patrick Collins was called on to make a sharp save from Seamus Casey. Pádraig Power brought his personal tally to 1-4 and Hayes to four in a pleasing outing for Cork despite Dalton’s dismissal, which will rule him out of the Limerick game.
The last time Cork were here 10 months ago, they won by 12 points as Alan Connolly scored the second of two hat-tricks in successive weekends. Wexford had nothing to play for in that final round game though whereas this was the opener in a new, more competitive Division 1A in which they are fancied to go down.
Down several players, there wasn’t much expectation they would surprise the All-Ireland runners-up and when Cork enjoyed a substantial breeze in the first half the situation looked onerous for the hosts.
Cork were understandably rusty in the opening quarter when they hit four wides and led by four points to two. However, Hayes was already enjoying himself with the abundance of direct ball that came his way. Cormac O’Brien and Niall O’Leary were Hayes’ second point of the evening put Cork 0-6 to 0-2 up in the 23rd minute, the second score in a 1-7 unanswered burst for Pat Ryan’s side. Declan Dalton landed a couple of long-range frees as well as a fine sideline cut from an acute angle before Hayes controlled a diagonal ball while holding off Simon Donohoe and laid it off for Power to find the opposing bottom corner.
Power followed up that 29th minute goal with a point seconds later to send Cork 12 points ahead. Wexford ended a 14-minute wait for a score with a Rory O’Connor effort and Cian Byrne landed his second free of the game but the gulf in class was obvious and Cork’s margin of comfort was 10 points at the break.
