Wexford veteran Brosnan strikes late to foil Tipperary

Allianz FL Division 4: Wexford 1-13 Tipperary 1-12

VETERAN Ben Brosnan provided the winning point three minutes into additional time to help Wexford to the narrowest of victories over Tipperary in this Allianz National Football League Division 4 tie.

Coming into the game, Wexford held a 100% record having achieved promotion seven days earlier, but that looked in real trouble when they trailed 1-12 to 0-7 17 minutes into the second half.

Tipperary had looked the more impressive side as they dominated around the middle of the field, and with Michael Freaney goaling after 52 minutes, they looked comfortable leading by eight points.

The intensity of Tipperary’s play looked to have Wexford in real trouble but manager John Hegarty introduced a number of his more experienced players, whom he had rested, and this changed the whole course of the game as Wexford took total control of the closing 15 minutes, a period in which the Premier County failed to register a single score.

Tipperary had opened the game in impressive fashion racing into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead through Michael Freaney and a two pointer from midfielder Kieran Costello, while the home side’s Martin O’Connor managed an excellent point from play in between.

With Cian Smith and Darren Brennan adding to their side’s tally, Tipperary still led 0-6 to 0-3 after 25 minutes, and they went on to finish the half strongly as they added further points through two Smith frees and Mark Stokes. Wexford’s best player, corner-forward Martin O’Connor, stormed forward for his side’s final point of the half, leaving Tipperary with a 0-9 to 0-5 interval lead.

Tipperary’s hopes of causing a shock increased on the resumption when Emmett Moloney pointed having intercepted a short clearance from the Wexford keeper.

Tipperary looked to have got the crucial score when Moloney powered forward and sent over a great ball across the face of the Wexford goal which was finished to the net by Freaney, giving Tipp a 1-12 to 0-7 lead.

Twelve minutes from the end Wexford managed to haul themselves back into the game when Glen Malone finished a Mark Rossiter cross to the net. With their more experienced players now having joined the acton, they went on to dominate the closing stages and gradually reduced the deficit, leaving Eoin Porter to bring the sides level, 1-12 apiece two minutes into additional time.

Amazingly Wexford took the lead for the first time in the game three minutes into added time, when Ben Brosnan sent over a fine point to bring a dramatic finish to an excellent game of football.
