Fantastic Fennell fires Clare past Limerick in Minor Football Championship

Clare 3-6 Limerick 0-9

Report by Tom Clancy for the Irish Examiner newspaper

A Seán Fennell inspired Clare turned the tables on Limerick during the second half to ensure back-to-back victories and progression into the Munster Championship proper.

With the win, a Daryl Darcy Cup final was also confirmed, but they needed three second half goals to overturn a five point deficit in Ballyagran.

Regardless of the outcome against two future clashes with Tipperary, the Banner will be in a Munster semi-final against Cork or Kerry next month.

Both of these sides had contrasting opening contests – the boys in green suffered a nine-point reverse away to Tipperary, while Clare needed a last gasp Conor Burke green flag to edge out Waterford.

The same player wasn’t as influential on the scoreboard this week, however, he combined well with Fennell as Clare’s kicking game propelled them back into the contest after a disappointing first half.

Credit too must be given Limerick, aided by a breeze, held kicked six fine scores, though they matched that tally with wides, to lead 0-6 to 0-1 after 30 minutes.

It was a first-half that saw a trio of long-range left footed efforts from Cian Costelloe, while captain Conor Ó Longaigh epitomised their front-foot football with a number of driving runs from wing-back.

They held Clare to one point, which arrived after 28 minutes, by which time Limerick had registered scores from Shane Dolan, Donal Dawson and Costelloe.

Burke’s sublime effort ended any worries of a scoreless half or Dermot Coughlan’s youngsters. His side would emerge a different animal in the second half, registering 1-2 to no score in the first nine minutes.

The home management will rue that the lead was only five points, and a poor third quarter for the second week in a row left them chasing the contest when they could have had something more sizeable to protect.

Burke got Clare moving after the resumption. He got them moving with a routine free, before Fennell found his scoring touch with a ’45. Then David Cahill got their first goal after Shane O’Connell kicked to Diarmuid McMahon who passed to the Clooney-Quin forward to blast home.

There was a decent Limerick reply, two points to go ahead again, but they lacked the energy and territory enjoyed in the first half. They would be limited to just a point in the closing stages, during which time Fennell went to the edge of the square.

Ammunition arrived immediately as Limerick failed to halt the momentum of the Banner.

The Kilrush Shamrocks man blasted over on 51 minutes, but made no mistake seconds later, powering home a goal to put Clare two up. He was then felled for a penalty, which he scored.

Perhaps appropriately, the final two scores went to Burke, set up by Fennell, and then Fennell curled over a free with the final act.

Both these sides have their final group next week, April 16th. Limerick travel to Lemybrien to face the Déise, with Clare entertaining the Premier in Quilty, which will be a dress rehearsal for the Phase One final.
