Munster MFC Phase One final: Clare 2-12 Tipperary 0-10

Report by John Keogh for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Clare are Munster MFC Phase One champions following an impressive 2-12 to 0-10 victory at Mick Neville Park.

The win sees Clare set up a provincial semi-final clash with Cork, while Tipperary face Kerry in the other last four clash.

Conor Burke was the star on show for Dermot Coughlan’s charges with the classy corner forward landing 1-8 in an absorbing performance.

Burke was aided and abetted by Sean Fennell in the full forward line in a game that Tipperary led by a point at the break.

Clare made the faster start of the two teams with Sean Fennell on early ball but his shot from distance after 20 seconds fell short, and into the grateful arms of Tipperary ‘keeper Mark Conroy.

The Banner didn’t have to wait long for their first score, however, as Conor Burke kicked them in front from a free after with two and a half minutes on the clock.

That advantage was doubled soon after when Daniel Brody found Fennell in a bit of space and the burly full forward slotted a well-worked score.

Tipperary responded with frees from Tom Corcoran and Jack Garrett but failed to break down a resolute Clare defence until late in the half.

Fennell had a goal chance in between those scores after excellent work from Shane O’Connell only to be denied by a fine Conroy save.

The Tipperary netminder did well to palm a powerful strike over the bar.

Clare’s defence gave them confidence as the half continued with Burke doubling their advantage once more after a patient attack.

Tipperary eventually settled into the contest with two Charlie Walsh frees and their first from play courtesy of Patrick McDonagh that put them in front for the first time.

Dylan Cotter then landed an excellent point from the right flank but Burke made it a one score game, 0-6 to 0-5, at half time. However, there was only one team in it after the short whistle with Burke very much to the fore.

Shane O’Connell got the ball rolling with a devastating finish to the net and David Cahill should have bagged a second moments later but had to settle for a point.

Burke kept the scoreboard ticking over from both play and frees, before he and Fennell combined late on for the second goal that sealed the Daryl Darcy cup.
