Shane Conway returns to inspire Kerry against Meath

Allianz Hurling League Division 2A: Kerry 3-14 Meath 0-16

Report by Murt Murphy for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Kerry recovered after a poor opening half to bag their first brace of Allianz Division 2A points against a struggling Meath side at wet and bitterly cold Austin Stack Park this afternoon.

Stephen Molumphy welcomed back his talisman Shane Conway who missed Kerry’s two opening losses to Carlow and Down and the former Fitzgibbon Cup winning star with UCC, top-scored with 1-9, but it was his flicks and tricks from general play that were most impressive.

The opening half was totally forgettable, devoid of any highlight as the sides were level on seven occasions before a Maurice O’Connor point saw Kerry retire 0-8 to 0-7 in front with Shane Conway scoring five points and Daithi Griffin, Niall Mulcahy and O’Connor adding one each.

Meath who were under the cosh for long periods of the half had a brace of points from Padraig O’Hanrahan, Nicky Potterton and Sean Quigley keeping the Royals in touch.

But Kerry had wasted 13 scoring chances in the opening half despite good work from Dáithí Griffin, Eric Leen, Dan Goggin and Fionan Mackessy.

But whatever Stephen Molumphy said to his charges at half time it worked in the second half as Kerry had an 80% conversion rate with wides after Shane Conway moved into the attack from midfield with Tom Doyle moving there to join Fionan Mackessy.

Early points from Conway and Tom Doyle saw Kerry move two clear after two Padraig O’Hanrahan frees kept Meath in touch. But then the gamechanger in the 46th minute when a Dan Goggin cross was fielded by Michael Leane who finished soccer style to the Meath net. O’Hanrahan kept Meath in touch from placed balls as Kerry led 1-11 to 0-11 after 55 minutes.

Then enter Shane Conway with a free and a sublime effort over his shoulder as he was being swarmed by three Meath players. Then Conway struck for a second Kerry goal when he slipped his marker Ronan Byrne, before shooting low from an angle past Meath keeper Charlie Ennis.

Kerry were now seven clear and despite three Meath points, Dan Goggin secured the win for Kerry with a 70th-minute goal. Kerry travel to Kildare in two weeks for a game where a win would give the Kingdom possibly a shot at a semi final spot in their final game against Laois.
