Munster MFC Round 1: Clare 1-17 Limerick 1-09
A final quarter surge finally cemented the Shannonside derby honours in what had predominaintly been an opening war of attrition in the Munster Minor Football Championship in Páirc Naomh Mhuire in Quilty.
Never more than a kick of the ball between the sides for the first 45 minutes, the home side finally put daylight between them coming down the final straight as inspirational captain Donncha O’Dwyer’s spectacular 56th minute goal capped off a 1-6 to 0-3 final quarter blitz.
Conor Burke, who was unlucky to see an opening minute shot come off the butt of the post, would be Clare’s guiding light throughout with 12 points to keep their noses in front. His wind-assisted first half haul of seven included an impressive brace of two-pointers which were necessary as Jamie Crowley had edged Limerick in front with his 23rd minute goal at 1-3 to 0-5.
Burke landed a two point free from the restart to ensure a 0-8 to 1-4 half-time edge and despite now facing into the conditions, the hosts never looked like relinquishing their advantage.
Ryan Sheehan’s free did keep Limerick in touch though at 0-11 to 1-6 by the turn of the final quarter. However, a four point unanswered burst, three from Burke, created a fissure that Donncha O’Dwyer made into a chasm with his late clinching goal that gives Joe Hayes’ side an early leg up in Phase 1.
