Munster MHC: Cork 1-21 Waterford 1-15

With a game to spare, Cork secured their place in the Electric Ireland Munster MHC final at a wet Páirc Uí Rinn on Friday night. The highlight of the victory was the performance of Cormac Deane – son of the legendary Joe – who as well as scoring an impressive eight points, the centre-forward drew two great saves from Waterford goalkeeper James Comerford.

Fergal McCormack’s charges now have three wins from three, but they will have to wait until next week to find out their opponents in the final when Waterford take on Clare in Dungarvan.

It was no surprise to see Cork and Waterford – two of the best teams in this competition – go toe-to-toe for most of the hour.

In fact the winners fell three behind in the 41st minute after Jamie Shanahan’s goal fired James O’Connor’s side 1-13 to 1-10 up.

Cork rattled off the next six points without reply.

And while Waterford came twice to within one, Cork closed out this round 4 tie emphatically with Deane (3) and Craig O’Sullivan (2) – his ninth placed ball.

The sides were level three times in the opening nine minutes and the free-taking of Cormac Spain brought the game to parity after quarter of an hour, 0-5 apiece.

The visitors took the lead for the first time through Shanahan in the 20th minute.

Cork registered the only goal of the half when wing-back Colm Garde’s long delivery deceived Comerford in the 25th minute, 1-6 to 0-8 – with the Rebel half-back line well on top.

Jack Power tied the match for the fifth time three minutes from time only for Ruairc Donovan to score a wonder point for Cork to lead 1-7 to 0-9 at the break.

The first 10 minutes of the second half saw the pendulum swing from side to side before Shanahan’s green flag gave Waterford an edge.

Cork managed to wrestle back control. And they made sure of the win with that late flurry of points.

Their final round game is at home to winless Tipperary while Waterford and Clare will battle for a place in the decider.
