Munster Minor Hurling Championship Round 2: Clare 1-17 Tipperary 2-12

A smash-and-grab finish ensured that Clare made a dramatic first impression on this year’s Munster Minor Hurling Championship at the expense of holders Tipperary in Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chiosóg.

Trailing by five points after a defensive lapse gifted Chris Dunne a goal at the two-thirds mark, it didn’t seem to be the home side’s day in what was a predominantly jittery opening display. However, through John Barry’s unerring freetaking, 14 points in all, crucially keeping the Banner in touch, they would grab a valuable lifeline in the 55th minute when impressive captain Graham Ball and substitute Liam Murphy combined to tee up Evan Cleary for an equalising goal at 1-14 to 2-11.

And with the conditions and momentum at their backs, a relieved Clare simply drove on for the line, raiding for three of the last four points, all from Barry frees, to clinch a rousing opening victory.

For Tipperary, it was a second successive defeat from a winning position, having been pipped in similar fashion by Waterford eight days ago and means that the defending Munster and All-Ireland champions’ retention hopes are hanging by a thread.

In contrast, the group opens up for Clare following this opening win, with one record set to fall next Saturday when hosting Cork in Tulla at 2pm.

Without key protagonists Dara Kennedy (injury) and Paul Rodgers (suspension), it was Clare’s perseverance that ultimate paid off, having been floored by a goal in either half.

The tie was only four minutes old when a failure to clear their lines was punished by an opportunist goal for Tommy O’Meara to power Tipperary 1-2 to 0-1 clear.

Clare’s response was a five point unanswered blitz, four from the stick of the talismanic Barry including two from play, to inch 0-6 to 1-2 in front by the end of the opening quarter.

Needing to capitalise on their wind advantage, James Woodlock’s side did rally with the last five points of the half, with Jack Cahill and Chris Dunne both raiding for braces to go into the dressing rooms 1-8 to 0-8 in front.

Early goal chances at either end for John Barry and Tommy O’Meara were repelled as Clare attempted to chip into the deficit, only to suffer a major blow in the 41st minute when a short puck-out was intercepted by Dunne to race through and fire to the roof of the home net to soar 2-09 to 0-10 clear.

Clare didn’t panic, thanks in the main to Barry’s ice cool free-taking and while Evan Cleary saw a goal attempt stopped by excellent goalkeeper Patrick McCormack at the turn of the final quarter, the Ballyea midfielder would persist to make amends ten minutes later and regain full parity.

That score provided the extra impetus to sprint for the line and cement what could yet be two pivotal opening points in what seems a wide open race for the decider.
