Limerick 0-6 (0-1-4) Tipperary 3-8 (3-0-8)

Tipperary eased to an opening round victory in Phase One of the Munster U20 Football Championship, having too much for a disappointing Limerick side in Rathkeale.

Playing under the new rules, the players adjusted well, though there were a couple of infractions on either side. That said, the impact of direct running served the visitors quite well. They had impressive outings from Tommy O’Connor and Charlie King, while they had a strong defensive showing throughout.

Goals from Daithi Hogan (2) and Paddy O’Keeffe were the difference, with a wasteful home side no match for a powerful Tipperary outfit.

Wind assisted, Limerick started the brighter and had an early two pointer, from the lively Evan Curry.

Tipperary skipper, Charlie King, made a surging run forward to open their account, clipping over a ninth minute effort.

The reply from those in green was swift and Tom Llyod was on hand to finish a neat move, curling over from just outside the 20 meter line.

However, the Treaty struggled to make any further impact on the scoresheet, despite assisted by the strong breeze. They would finish the opening half with six wides as well as two efforts which dropped short.

Niall Fitzgerald’s charges carried a more potent threat. Paddy O’Keeffe finishing off a Tommy O’Connor pass before the same player provided Jamie O’Keeffe with the ammunition to tie the game at three apiece.

Joe Higgins kicked the Premier ahead for the first time, to start the second quarter.

The opening goal arrived on 22 minutes after great pressing from Paddy O’Keeffe. He forced a turnover, before handpassing across goal for Daithí Hogan who neatly finished from close range.

Hogan soon tapped over a free, after his opposite number, Pádraic Phelan didn’t hand the ball back on halfway. The interval scoreline of 1-5 to 0-3 showed Limerick’s inaccuracy and Tipperary’s efficiency in front of the posts.

Despite scoring the first point through a Diarmuid Hynes free, Limerick then lost Tom Ryan to a black card. The Oola native body checking a Tipperary runner.

A Ben Carey re-opened the five point buffer during the period, while Hynes had a great goal chance, but spurned it when drilling straight at Robbie McGrath. Then, just as Limerick were about to be restored to 15 men, they conceded a second goal.

Dylan Cotter found O’Keeffe who thundered home off the underside of the crossbar.

The final goal came after great work by JP Mbokha Tansia off the bench – freeing Hogan who showed a composed finish to complete the rout.
