Brosnan and Conway help Kerry storm past Derry
Report by Murt Murphy at Austin Stack Park for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Allianz NHL: Kerry 5-20 Derry 1-12
Kerry responded to last weekend’s heavy defeat in Newbridge with a big win over a Derry side who are struggling with injuries and absentees in the Allianz Hurling League Division Two clash at a near deserted Austin Stack Park.
Derry started encouragingly with two Richie Mullan points inside three minutes but that was as good as it got for the visitors. Once Kerry got going with Shane Conway and Rory Mahony pulling the strings at midfield it was mostly one way traffic for the rest of the half.
Rory Mahony with a brace of points and sharp looking Shane Nolan added another as did MTU Cork Fitzgibbon player Ronan Walsh and the signs were ominous for the Oak Leaf county.
Kerry were tight at the back with Kyle O’Connor, Sean McGrath and Daithi Griffin on top, the Kerry attack got plenty of quality ball. Shane Conway added three points (two frees) while Rory Mahony added his third as the Kingdom dominated throughout the pitch.
Ronan Walsh left it at 0-9 to 0-2 before Derry registered their first score in twenty minutes with Shea Cassidy scoring from play.
But Kerry struck a mortal blow to Derry’s chances in the 26th when Mahony sent Seanie Brosnan through who blasted the ball to the Derry net.
Brosnan added two more points before Oisin Maunsell scored a superb second goal just before half time with Shane Nolan providing the assist. Kerry led 2-12 to 0-4 and it was a case of going though the motions in the second half with Kerry scoring points at will and three goals from Oisin Maunsell, Shane Conway and Seanie Brosnan as Kerry cruised to a twenty point win and now can look forward to a trip to Donegal in two weeks time. There was late sending offs for Kyle O’Connor and Richie Mullan but it was on the final whistle.
