Wall provides the stability as Kilmurry call on experience to hold off Michael Cusack’s
Report by Therese O’Callaghan for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Munster JFC quarter-final: Kilmurry (Cork) 1-14 Michael Cusack’s (Clare) 1-11
Kilmurry ground out a hard-fought win over a gallant Michael Cusack’s in the AIB Munster club JFC quarter-final at a damp Cloughduv on Saturday. It was the victors’ third-successive appearance in this competition and they needed all of that experience as they were hit with an unanswered 1-3 in the first five minutes.
They recovered to trail by a point at the break, and with the wind in their favour in the second half they drew level for the first time four minutes after the restart.
Liam Wall nailed eight important points overall – two outrageous efforts from play in difficult conditions in the second half – for Cormac Linehan’s side to see it out.
They moved five points clear with as many minutes remaining, but there was a late kick in the Clare visitors who twice cut the gap to three points. A trip to Tipperary now awaits in the semi-final in a fortnight and a meeting with Cashel King Cormacs.
Wind-assisted, Michael Cusack’s started like a train. Points from their chief marksman and captain Seán McNamara and Domhnall McMahon were followed by a Seaghan Brosnan goal after towering full-forward McMahon’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Jason McDonnell.
Despite being shorn of attackers Aidan Forde (travelling) and Noel Hynes (injured), they remained on the front foot, 1-5 to 0-2 following the first quarter.
Rory Duggan’s white flag cut the gap to four points before there was a big call from referee Donnacha O’Callaghan when Kilmurry were awarded a penalty in the 20th minute after it was deemed Hugh Kelly over-carried the ball, the penalty was dispatched by Tomás Collins. It was a decision that aggrieved the Clare champions.
While Joey Droney and McNamara responded, Kilmurry would eat further into the lead, behind 1-6 to 1-7 at the short whistle.
McNamara stretched Michael Cusack’s advantage when play resumed, however they failed to find the target over the next 23 minutes, which ultimately proved to be their downfall.
As Kilmurry – lining out without the injured Gearóid O’Mahony (cruciate) – applied pressure, they were awarded a second penalty in the 36th minute, this time for a foot block on Wall, which Collins sent over the bar.
John and Joe Mullane added points and there was a brace from Wall, 1-13 to 1-8 now with five minutes remaining, plus an additional five that would be signalled.
Michael Cusack’s sparked to life once again through two McNamara frees, while Conor McGann cleared the ball off his own line.
Joe Mullane pointed to ease the nerves for Kilmurry, but a quick free from McMahon flew over in the 64th minute, 1-14 to 1-11.
A minute later Joe O’Mullane had a goal chance that came back off the post for Kilmurry. They didn’t need the score and held on, finishing with 14 men as Kyle Kelleher received a black card at the death.
