Limerick secured safe passage to the Tailteann Cup quarter-finals with youngster Emmet Rigter among their leading lights in a deserved win over neighbours Tipperary at a sun drenched Mick Neville Park in Rathkeale.

It is three wins in a row for Limerick, the first time they’ve achieved such a feat since Billy Lee was manager of the team in 2020, but his brother Jimmy will be delighted to make his own mark as Treaty manager.

For Tipperary, it brings to an end a challenging season. Having defeated Wexford last weekend, there was hopes for a bigger push for the Premier County, but in the end, their Championship ends with four defeats from five, having suffered a surprise loss to Waterford in the Munster Championship.

Tipperary weren’t helped with the loss of three men during the game through injury, while team captain Stephen O’Brien was also ruled out through injury prior to throw-in.

The winners held a 0-8 to 1-4 interval lead. This slender lead despite Limerick dominating proceedings. Paudie Feehan’s goal on 33 minutes gave Paul Kelly’s charges some hope but their failure to back it up in the third quarter meant they were always chasing Limerick.

The boys in green had kicked the opening four points, with Cillian Fahy and captain Iain Corbett among four different scorers. They would also have a brace of ‘45’s from keeper Josh Ryan, who ignored the swirling wind to land these fine efforts.

The Premier were living off scraps but when Sean O’Connor slotted his second free of the opening half, they claimed the kickout and Feehan surged through the centre and arrowed an unstoppable bullet into the top corner.

Lee’s words were still ringing in his players ears after half-time, when his team kicked three points in as many minutes. Rigter, Ryan and earlier James Naughton opened up a four point lead.

The visitors did come closer, with three points on the trot, to make it 0-13 to 1-8 by the 52nd minute. However, the game perhaps slipped away from them in one minute of action.

Feehan, seeking a second goal, thundered off the bar, before Limerick countered and Rigter curled over. From here, Limerick sprinted for home.

Neville fed Rigter for their only goal after a strong run from sub Brian Ahern. Neville smartly tapped over two points on the counter-attack, to help push the margin out to a more accurate eight by the final whistle.

Limerick fell at the quarter-final stage 12 months ago, with an away tie presenting a chance to reach Croke Park.
