Munster U20 Football Championship Round 2: Tipperary 1-8 Clare 1-6
Report by Eoin Brennan for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Phase 1 of a new-look Munster Under 20 Football Championship was blown wide open when Tipperary’s powerful finish of 1-3 without reply snatched victory from hosts Clare in Páirc Naomh Mhuire in Quilty.
Despite a gale at their backs, things looked bleak for the Premier County when trailing by four points entering the final 10 minutes.
However, the narrative altered irrevocably when Tipperary talisman Orrin Jones found space to unleash an unstoppable shot to the roof of the Clare net in the 50th minute at 1-6 to 1-5.

Buoyed by that score, Jones took his afternoon’s impressive tally to 1-4 with an equalising free two minutes later but it was only in additional time that Niall Fitzgerald’s side pushed on for their first win.
A ’45 from goalkeeper Robbie McGrath handed Tipperary the lead for the very first time in the 61st minute before midfielder Joe Higgins provided the insurance point to put his side in the driving seat heading into next Saturday’s final round.
Letting the game slip from their grasp, Michael Neylon’s Clare will be more frustrated by their first-half showing as they failed to capitalise on the conditions when kicking seven wides.
Clare did finally get off the mark in the ninth minute when a Conor Fennell goal chance was spurned but play was pulled back for a free that Daire Culligan gladly accepted. Sean McMahon doubled the Banner’s advantage entering the second quarter but their profligacy in front of the posts did leave the door of opportunity ajar for the visitors to prosper as Orrin Jones’ opening point in the 23rd minute was accentuated by an eye-catching Michael Freaney score from the right wing to regain full parity in the next passage of play.
Clare did bounce back off the ropes with late points from Eanna Rouine and Culligan to take a 0-4 to 0-2 advantage into the interval. However, considering the strength of the wind, it didn’t seem sufficient to hold out.
The home side did receive a stroke of fortune only two minutes into the new half with corner-back Aaron Kelly played an incisive one-two with Luke Pyne before seeing his shot for a point dip into the top eight corner of Robbie McGrath’s net at 1-4 to 0-2.

Orrin Jones did his best to turn the tide but Clare seemed in full control as Darren Keane and Eanna Rouine simply matched Tipperary to take a four-point cushion into the final quarter.
A moment of magic from Orrin Jones proved decisive however as Tipperary completed a remarkable six-point turnaround to ensure that their Phase 2 fate is still very much in their own hands heading into a final-round showdown away to Waterford in Lemybrien next Saturday (2pm) while it’s also winners-takes-all in the Shannonside derby between Limerick and Clare in Ballyagran.
