Limerick U20s strike late to continue Waterford’s winless run

Munster U-20 hurling championship: Limerick 0-20 Waterford 1-16

Report by Paul Keane for the Irish Examiner newspaper

They’re getting closer, we’ll say that much for Waterford.

Take their 2022 win over Kerry out of it and the county’s U-20s haven’t won a championship game at the grade since collecting the All-Ireland title way back in 2016.

So while this final round group game was billed as a dead rubber in Rathkeale, it felt anything but for Waterford who were desperate not to finish another season without a win.

And Ken McGrath’s crew almost pulled off a landmark victory with senior star Patrick Fitzgerald’s 11th point of the evening leaving them one up in the 58th minute.

Limerick, also winless beforehand and keen to avoid rock bottom in the table, responded impressively and decisively. Oisin O’Farrell, wing-back Vince Harrington and captain Cian Scully, their Man of the Match, all reeled off points to ultimately win it for the Shannonsiders.

Sean Mackey closed out the scoring for Waterford but Limerick had given themselves just enough of a cushion to win it by the narrowest of margins.

For a game billed as a dead rubber, it was full of life.

A Fitzgerald point after just 15 seconds set the tone for an energetic encounter played in perfect conditions and when Jack Twomey netted in the fifth minute, Waterford led 1-2 to no score.

It was a memorable goal from the De La Salle talent who outstripped William Dore for pace along the right endline, cut back inside Sean Casey and then beat the ‘keeper at his near post with a blistering finish.

That early Deise flame was reduced to a flicker though as Limerick came storming into the game in the second quarter, five points in a row at one stage moving them 0-14 to 1-7 clear at the break. Scully was excellent in this period, a wing-back performance a la Kyle Hayes that yielded 0-6 overall.

Limerick retained that four-point lead at the three-quarter mark but five unanswered Waterford points turned the game on its head once more. Waterford were on the verge of a badly needed win now but, agonisingly, couldn’t see it through.
