Three late points edge unbeaten Laois past Tipperary

Allianz NFL Division 4, Round 4

Laois 0-11 Tipperary 1-7

Report by Michael Dundon for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Tipperary’s hopes of promotion from division 4 of the National Football League were dashed at Semple Stadium on Sunday as they lost out agonisingly to table-toppers Laois who surged home with three late points.

It was a game Tipperary will feel they left behind them as they missed a penalty chance in the 41st minute which, if converted, could have tipped the scales in their favour.

Unbeaten Laois were rocked by an early Tipperary goal when Sean O’Connor was set-up by Paddy Creedon in the ninth minute to put Tipp 1-1 to 0-1 in front.

They held this advantage until the 23rd minute as Laois levelled at 0-5 to 1-2 and Shaun Fitzpatrick nudged Laois ahead with a further point after 26 minutes.

Tipp might have had a second goal but Peter McGarry’s effort came back off the woodwork in the 32nd minute and Laois led 0-6 to 1-2 at the break.

The sides were level, 1-4 to 0-7, six minutes into the second half when Tipp’s Mark Stokes was fouled but Sean O’Connor’s penalty effort was turned away by the diving Killian Roche in the Laois goal. Shaun Fitzpatrick put Laois ahead shortly afterwards but then they lost Evan O’Carroll to a black card.

Tipperary took full advantage of their numerical advantage with points from Rian Quigley, and O’Connor (2) to be 1-7 to 0-8 ahead after 52 minutes, and looked to be heading for victory.

However, when restored to full strength, Laois piled on the pressure. They had three points in five minutes from Kieran Lillis, Evan O Carroll and Paul Kingston to push ahead by the 69th minute. Tipp went all out for a leveller but a resolute defence closed down all avenues to goal.

It was a big win for Laois who, unbeaten after four games, look certainties for promotion. They showed great resolve when things were going against them with Evan O’Carroll, Shaun Fitzpatrick, Mark Barry, Mark Timmons and goalkeeper Killian Roche key men in securing full points.

Tipp’s new-look team have just three points from four games and are out of the running for promotion despite the best efforts of Sean O’Connor, Paddy Creedon, Jimmy Feehan, Paudie Feehan Jack Kennedy and Peter McGarry.
