McNamara goal helps Sligo to deserved win in Limerick

Allianz FL Division 3: Limerick 0-10 Sligo 1-12

Report by John Keogh for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Sligo got their second win in succession in Division 3 of the Allianz Football League after a 1-12 to 0-10 victory over Limerick at Mick Neville Park in Rathkeale.

Paul McNamara’s goal in the 28th minute was the crucial score in a game that was dominated by Tony McEntee’s side.

They had the advantage of a strong breeze in the opening half and held a five-point advantage courtesy of McNamara’s smart finish.

Limerick’s second half charge never came as Sligo picked them off on the counter attack with Paul Murphy and Sean Carribine influential throughout.

Two Patrick O’Connor points had Sligo into an early lead with Peter Nash responding for Limerick.

However, it was a brief respite with Carribine and Pat Spillane scores seeing Sligo three up with 14 minutes played.

A superb Tommie Childs point brought Limerick to withing two and another well-worked strike from Barry Coleman made it a one-point game.

Sligo were soon back up the other end with Spillane kicking a second superb score and McNamara followed up with his goal seven minutes from half time.

Eoghan Smith and Niall Murphy combined to set up the Sligo defender and he placed his shot beyond the reach of Limerick goalkeeper Aaron O’Sullivan.

Murphy then followed up with his first point of the game to give Sligo a 1-7 to 0-5 advantage at the break.

Limerick made a positive start to the second half after Murphy bagged his second score with Nash firing over a fine effort from play that was soon followed by a another that cut the gap to four points Sligo responded with a Carribine free and a ‘45 goalkeeper Aidan Devaney as Limerick failed to build on their positive second half start.

Jimmy Lee’s men went 25 minutes without a second half score and were punished for their poor shooting in the final quarter.

Alan McLaughlin got a third Sligo score on the bounce, before Nash fired his fourth of the afternoon.

Limerick needed a goal to have any hope of a late comeback with Eoin Hurley coming closest but his shot from the left was well saved by Devaney as Sligo eased to victory.
