Tipperary defeated Kerry by 1-28 to 1-14 in Round 3 of the Co-Op Superstores Munster Hurling League on Sunday January 14th at MacDonagh Park Nenagh.

Cahill satisfied after win over Kerry as Tipp ‘dark horses’ make their case

Tipperary manager Liam Cahill has put the learnings from his first year as senior boss into practise as his youthful selection completed their Munster Hurling League campaign with a comfortable win over Kerry in MacDonagh Park, Nenagh on Sunday.

With both sides having lost to Waterford in their respective round 1 openers, there was little at stake on a bitter afternoon as Cahill ran the rule over many of his extended panel with the aim of beefing up his core squad ahead of the start of the National League in three weeks’ time.

“We have a core panel that train three nights a week, but we also have a good young development panel running in parallel to that,” he revealed following the game.

“And we are trying to integrate as many players as well can into our training sessions with our core group to make sure they get a good understanding of what is required from a training and preparation perspective.

“Some of them were on our panel today and got game time. There are a few dark horses there that are putting their hand up, and we’ll put a real structure on that by the first round of the league, and make sure the players that are in form will be brought with us, as well as keeping guys in the age bracket of 21+ engaged as well that the door isn’t closed and that if they go away and do the work they will come into our plans as well.”

One of those that did his chances of elevating himself onto the panel was Sean Kenneally, who was a thorn in the Kerry side from the off, and in a low-key affair, a player bringing the right attitude will always stand out, with the Moneygall clubman, landing four points but was a constant source as a ball-winner.

It was very much an experimental Tipperary side with just seven players having featured in the 2023 championship, but an All-Ireland medal winner in 2016 & 2019 Barry Heffernan, who missed last year through injury, impressed with three points from midfield on home turf.

There was no repeat of their famous win of 2022 for the Kerry senior hurlers in the same competition but the visitors were still very much in the mix at half time, trailing 0-17 to 1-11 with Shane Conway top-scoring with seven points while Dan Goggin scored a well-taken 25th minute goal. Newcomer Luke Crowley also impressed with three points from play from wing forward.

Gearoid O’Connor top-scored for Tipp with 1-10, all coming from placed balls, including a 46th minute penalty goal following a foul on Andrew Ormond but the moved owed much to Kenneally making the initial attacking thrust.

Kerry selector Pat Bennett reflected on the huge learnings from their Munster League defeats to Waterford and Tipperary, and laments the inability to play more of the leading teams in the province before they start their division 2 campaign against Carlow next month.

“Our age profile is 21-years of age, we have 16 new fellas on our panel of the 36 from last year so we are starting all over again,” he said.

“So the likes of Luke Crowley, Ronan Walsh and Felim O’Sullivan are coming in and you have to give them game-time especially in tier one when you are playing at the level Tipp are. We need to be playing more matches against them and if we do then we are at that level the whole time but the problem is we got these two (games) and we won’t play them again for twelve months. But it is in our power to try and win the league and get up a level to play these teams more often.”
