Second-half goals from cousins Matthew Mulcahy and Brian Mulcahy helped St Catherine’s to victory in the AIB Munster Club JHC semi-final at Páirc Uí Rinn today. Just a point in front at the break, 0-8 to 0-7, the green flags set the tone, and at the end, Denis Walsh’s charges were fully deserving of their 12-point win.

The final will be against Feenagh-Kilmeedy of Limerick the first weekend in December.

St Catherine’s had the benefit of an away quarter-final win over Ardmore (2-16 to 1-11) two weeks ago. And it told, as they started much the brighter with a trio of points from Matthew Mulcahy, Seán O’Donoghue and Brian Mulcahy – their third point could well have been a goal as the sliotar flew over the bar following good work out the field by Kyle Wallace and William Leamy.

The east Cork side pulled further away, 0-5 to 0-2 after 10 minutes.

Wind-assisted Ballinahinch rallied well, but surprisingly went for goal from a 20m free when a point was the easier option.

Brendan Ryan made up for it a couple of minutes later as the Tipperary team got to grips with proceedings, and they found points from Brendan Ryan (two frees) and John Foley to level the contest after quarter of an hour.

O’Donoghue and Eoin Davis were unerring from placed balls to go in front again.

Joey Kelly and a Shane McGrath free was the response, the game entering stoppage.

St Catherine’s would lead at the break by the minimum, 0-8 to 0-7, as Davis notched his second long-range free.

Ballinahinch, with the evergreen Shane McGrath still performing to a high standard, threatened to get a foothold, and took the lead momentarily through Kark Kelly (free) and Brendan Ryan.

But sensing the game getting away from them, St Catherine’s applied the pressure.

The goals in the 35th and 45th minute denied the Tipp side the opportunity to build any momentum as they pushed for home, and they struck the final seven points unanswered.
