Dean Ryan Cup Under 16.5 A Hurling Quarter-Final
Midleton CBS 0-17 CBC Cork 0-12
Report by Ed Donnelly
Midleton CBS produced a powerful second half performance to earn a five-point victory over Christian Brothers College Cork on Wednesday afternoon.
Played in blustery conditions at Church Road, Midleton CBS had the aid of the breeze in the opening half and raced in to a three-point lead in the opening two minutes with scores from Brion Saunderson (free), Diarmuid Healy and Jack Leahy. CBC Cork got off the mark in the 4th minute with a pointed free by Eoin O’Leary followed by points from Cian Barrett and O’Leary (free) to level the scores after 8 minutes. Tom Savage (Midleton) and Barrett (CBC) traded points soon afterwards before Midleton began to dominate proceedings.
With CBC being held scoreless for 15 minutes, Midleton’s Diarmuid Healy had a goal chance saved by Eoin O’Neill in the 12th minute before three points on the trot by Jack Leahy (2 frees) put them in to a 0-7 to 0-4 lead heading in the closing stages of the first half.
CBC’s scoring drought ended when Eoin O’Leary scored two points (one free) in the 25th and 27th minute and when David Cremin added another point from play in the 28th minute, the sides were level. Midleton CBS would record the final score of the half, a point from play by Diarmuid Healy to lead at the interval by 0-8 to 0-7.

Midleton CBS set the tone for the second half when from the throw-in, the ball was worked up to full-forward Diarmuid Healy who scored a point from play. When John Ahern and Jack Leahy added further points from play, Midleton’s lead had been stretched to four points.
CBC got their first score of the second half when wing-back Peter Linehan scored a point from play to leave three points between the sides after 40 minutes. John Ahern restored Midleton’s three-point advantage before CBC Cork had points from play by Evan Kelly and Cillian Egan which left just two points in it heading in to the final quarter.
Jack Leahy (Midleton) and Eoin O’Leary (CBC – free) traded points as the game was delicately poised with ten minutes remaining. With a heavy shower now making conditions difficult, it was Midleton CBS who played better for the remainder of the game.
David Joseph had proved a good target man for Midleton CBS up to this stage but had failed to get on the scoresheet. But in the final ten minutes, Joseph managed to score three points from play while Diarmuid Healy also scored from play as Midleton outscored CBC by 0-4 to 0-1 in the closing stages to run out winners by a flattering five point margin.
Midleton CBS will now play De La Salle College Waterford or Coláiste Cholmáin Fermoy in the semi-final.
