Mitchelstown CBS had four points to spare over Colaiste An Spioraid Naoimh in the Munster Senior (B) HC quarter final (Corn Thomais Mhic Cholm) at Mallow on Friday.
The City side did well in the opening minutes with four points on the trot by Ger Collins (3) and Cathal Fitzpatrick. CBS got to terms improving a lot in the half backline and they cut the lead to a point by the 12th minute when James Keating (2) and George Pendle were on target. Spioraid Naoimh added another pointed free by Collins. CBS battled hard two frees on Mark Keane and Adrian English opened the way for James Keating to point both and force level at 0-5 each. Spioraid Naoimh edged in front again when Ger Collins pointed a long range free. Both sides were off target from frees before Sean O’Sullivan and Mark Keane combined well for Adrian English to score a fine goal in the closing moments. Ger Collins was wide from an injury time ’65 as CBS held an interval lead 1-6 to 0-6.
On the resumption Spioraid Naoimh missed a good goal scoring chance when Kelvin Forde was wide from a tight angle. James Keating pointed a ’65 and a free that opened up a five point lead 1-8 to 0- 6. Spioraid Naoimh relied mainly on Ger Collins for scores, he pointed another free in the 40th minute. James Keating restored the 5 point lead with another free and the same player pointed from a massive sideline cut that moved his side 6 points clear. CBS were doing well at this stage. A foul on Dylan Kent led to another James Keating free that put the CBS double scores clear 1-11 to 0-7.
The City side put in a huge late effort. They improved in the half backline and their attack were in regular supply. Ian Butler in goal for CBS made some splendid saves as the City side went all out for a goal that would bring them back into contention. Jack Coughlan had a long range CBS point. Ger Collins followed with two pointed frees. Ian Butler made a massive save from Richard Lombard. James Keating had his 11th point in the 57th minute 1-13 to 0- 9. A free by Ger Collins was taken quickly to Richard Lombard who pointed. Another free by Ger Collins was well saved by Ian Butler. Lombard was denied a good goal scoring chance by Killian Roche before goalkeeper Cathal Fitzpatrick completed the scoring with a pointed ’65 deep in injury time.
CBS will now meet Christ Ri in the semi final on Saturday January 30.
