Tipperary will face Kilkenny in the All-Ireland SHC Final on September 7 after recording a stunning victory over Munster rivals Cork at Croke Park on Sunday. Munster champions Cork were meeting Tipperary in a championship match at Headquarters for the very first time in their long shared history, but Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s fancied Rebels were completely outclassed by a totally re-energised Tipperary.

Two brilliant goals from Séamus Callanan in either half paved the way to victory for Tipperary, and they were the better side throughout as they punished Cork’s profligacy in front of goal, the Rebels finishing with 15 wides.

While Callanan’s eye for goal was exemplary, so too was John O’Dwyer’s, with the Killenaule man striking 0-6 from play. Tipperary’s midfield pairing of Shane McGrath and James Woodlock were also outstanding, as they contributed 0-6 between them. Tipp led by two points at the break and probably should have been even more in front. It mattered little though, as Cork were totally outclassed after the restart, Tipperary scoring 1-11 in the second half to just 1-3 from the Rebels.

Tipperary held a slender 1-7 to 0-8 lead at the interval, but they were good value for it after having the better of Cork for the opening 35 minutes. Cork took an early lead through Alan Cadogan, but Tipp took control in the eighth minute when Callanan, by far their pre-eminent attacker of 2014, cracked in a wonderful goal from 20 metres.

The ball broke to him after a slip from Cork’s Shane O’Neill, but Callanan did brilliantly to find the top right hand corner of Anthony Nash’s net from a considerable distance out. The score energised Tipperary, and points from O’Dwyer (2) and Woodlock followed to leave Eamon O’Shea’s side five ahead at 1-3 to 0-1. The sides traded the next few scores but Tipperary were looking confident and two scores from Shane McGrath had them five ahead at 1-6 to 0-4.

Cork came into the game in the second quarter, but they were still guilty of some poor wides, and although points from Anthony Nash (free) and Conor Lehane cut the deficit to three, O’Dwyer replied with an inspirational score, blocking down Damien Cahalane and clipping over, to keep Tipp four ahead.
However, with Aidan Walsh and Daniel Kearney beginning to see more and more ball around the middle, Cork hit the final two scores of the half through Nash and Patrick Horgan (frees) to trail by two at the interval.

Points from McGrath, Woodlock and Callanan after the break restored a five-point Tipperary lead, but the killer score came on 47 minutes when Callanan found the net again brilliantly. After some characteristically trojan work from Patrick Maher, Callanan hit a venomous drive past Nash into the roof of the Cork net to leave Tipp eight ahead.

That goal prompted some exhibition hurling from Tipperary, as John O’Dwyer fired over three in a row to take his tally to six and Woodlock clipped over his third of the day to leave Tipperary 11 clear. Cork managed a goal before the end from substitute Rob O’Shea, but in truth, the Rebels never looked capable of any sort of meaningful revival as Tipp made the most of their struggles to surge into the final and set up a date of destiny with arguably their greatest rivals of all.
