The Tipp U21 footballers qualified for the Munster final against Cork when they had the easiest of victories at Miltown Malbay last night. Clare won the toss and elected to play with a very strong wind. But it was the visitors that impressed early on. Quick hands, swift passing and fine finishing were features of their game, whereas Clare were far too tentative.

Clare led by 0-5 to 0-4 after 20 minutes but Tipp flexed their muscles in the final 10 minutes of the half and recorded five unanswered points in that period. Steven O’Brien, Greg Henry twice, Michael Quinlivan and Sean Flynn all got on the scoresheet to give the Premier County a deserved four-point advantage at the first whistle, Clare trailing by 0-9 to 0-5.

The Banner did rally a little after the break and thanks to free-taker Niall Hickey they trailed by 0-12 to 0-8 by the 39th minute. But that was as close as they got. Tipp picked off their opening goal in the 44th after a good move out of defence ended with Greg Henry coolly slotting a low shot to the Clare net. Tipperary added a further nine points in what looked like shooting practice, to Clare’s solitary point before the final whistle. Tipp grabbed a second goal at the death, as Liam McGrath deceived Clare goalie Darren Sexton.

GOALS FROM GREG Henry and Liam McGrath helped Tipperary crush Clare in tonight’s Munster U21 football semi-final in Miltown Malbay. The Premier county were hugely impressive as they claimed a 19-point victory and set up a final rematch with Cork – twelve months after losing out to the Rebels in the decider.

Tipperary maintained the impressive form they displayed last week against Waterford in accounting for the Banner tonight. Clare had the wind in the first-half with Martin O’Leary and Niall Hickey ensuring they kept the scoreboard ticking over early on. Clare led 0-5 to 0-4 by the 20th minute mark but they shipped five points in a row before the break as Tipperary moved into a healthy position at the break.

Tipperary took over in the second-half with senior forward Michael Quinlivan excelling with his point-taking. The game was essentially put to bed in the 44th minute when Henry found the net for the first goal of the game. Tipperary were ahead 1-16 to 0-8 entering the final quarter and they piled on the scores in the closing stages with Quinlivan leading the way. The second goal arrived just before the finish from Liam McGrath as Tipperary moved comfortably into the decider.

• Having failed to win a game in the Munster Under 21 Football Championship between 2002 and 2006, Tipperary have managed to win at least one match in this competition in 6 of the last 7 years, including the 2010 Munster title.
• Waterford have lost their last 9 matches in the Munster Under 21 Football Championship.
• Cork are going for their fourth Munster Under 21 Football title in a row. The last such sequence of victories for Cork came from 2004 to 2007 when they won four titles on the trot – each of them against different opposition in the final (Kerry, Limerick, Waterford and Tipperary).
