Corn Uí Mhuirí Final – PS Dhuibhne 3-14 DLS Macroom 3-9

Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne defeated DLS Macroom by 3-14 to 3-9 in the Corn Uí Mhuirí Final on Saturday March 8th at Dr. Crokes GAA Club Killarney. In an entertaining high scoring game, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne led by 2-8 to 2-3 at half-time having played with the wind in the first half.

Before an attendance of 1098, DLS Macroom kept plugging away and with 8 minutes remaining the Cork team had reduced the arrears to just 2 points, 2-11 to 2-9. Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne added another couple of points before they scored their third goal on 58 minutes, all three of which were scored by full-forward Cathal O Bambaire and that effectively wrapped up the title for Dingle. There was still time for a consolation goal for Macroom scored by James Moynihan but it was Dingle’s day, securing their third  Corn Uí Mhuirí title in a row.

Afterwards, Barra Ó Súilleabháin accepted the cup on behalf of a jubilant Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne team and their supporters. Best of luck to both schools in the All-Ireland series and thanks to Dr. Crokes for the use of their excellent facilities and to referee Richard Moloney and his officials.

POBALSCOIL CHORCA DHUIBHNE of Dingle clinched a third successive Corn Uí Mhuirí (Munster Colleges SAFC) title today as they withstood a fightback from Macroom’s De La Salle at Dr Crokes’ grounds in Killarney. Midway through the second half, the side managed by Kerry boss Eamonn Fitzmaurice looked safe as they possessed a five-point lead and the fight appeared to be gone from Macroom.

They managed to call upon extra reserves, however, and reeled off three unanswered points, two from Cian Healy and one by Barry O’Leary, to come to within two. A free from Séamus Ó Muircheartaigh ended Corca Dhuibhne’s drought though and they ensured that they did enough to claim victory. Cathal Ó Bambaire scored his and his side’s third goal late on, making John Murphy’s response for Macroom a consolation.

With the wind in the first half, Corca Dhuibhne threatened to put themselves out of sight as Macroom, playing two extra men in defence, struggled to make any attacking headway. They got a lifeline when Joseph Ryan converted a penalty – after being fouled himself – to make it 0-7 to 1-2. Immediately, Cathal Ó Bambaire responded in kind for the holders only for James Moynihan to score a second Macroom goal, poking home after Peter Kelleher punched the ball against the post. Had they held out until half-time, then maybe things would be different but Corca Dhuibhne fashioned another goal chance, Tomás Ó Sé putting Ó Bambaire in for a second green flag.

That made it 2-8 to 2-3 at the interval, and with Tomás Ó Sé and Maitiú Ó Flatharta shining, Corca Dhuibhne forged further clear in the second half. Macroom responded, but when the big questions were asked, Corca Dhuibhne had the answers.

Corn Uí Mhuirí Final – Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne v De La Salle Macroom

The eagerly awaited Corn Uí Mhuirí Final for 2014 takes place on Saturday next March 8th when Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne look to win their third title in a row against Cork opponents in the shape of De La Salle Macroom. Dr. Crokes GAA grounds in Killarney is the picturesque venue for this final and with the forecast predicting Saturday to be the warmest day of 2014 to date, it augurs well for an entertaining final.

The Macroom outfit will be looking to win their second ever title at this grade following success in 2006. Since then, they have been knocking on the door with final appearances in 2010 and 2012, the latter of which they lost out to Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne. On that occasion, the Kerry school raced in to a 1-7 to 0-3 interval lead only to see Macroom stage an impressive second half comeback. With only three points separating the teams going in to the final stages, it looked like either side could win it but Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne hit 1-2 without replay in the final stages to run out deserving winners by 2-10 to 0-8. There were great celebrations in Dingle and the surrounding areas given that the school had achieved history by winning the Corn Uí Mhuirí title for the first time and yet a mere 24 months later, they are on the cusp of winning three in a row.

Dominating a post-primary schools competition to secure three titles in a row is a rare feat and demonstrates the hard work not only being done inside the confines of the school but also within the structures of the clubs feeding in the players. The last school to win three titles in a row in this competition was Colaiste Na Sceilge, successful in 2001, 2002 and 2003 while St. Brendan’s Killarney, Tralee CBS and Coláiste Chríost Rí are the only other schools to achieve this feat.

Barra Ó Súilleabháin (Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne & Daingean Uí Chúis) and Peter Kelleher (DLS Macroom & Kilmichael) will lead their teams in to the 2014 final and interestingly, both line out at midfield where they also played in the 2012 final. As ever, the midfield battle will be intense and the winner in this sector will help to provide a platform for their forwards to thrive and secure the required scores for victory.

Scoring however has been at a premium, especially for the opponents of Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne in their march to the final. Over 5 matches (including two periods of extra time), the Kerry school has conceded a paltry 5-31 or an average of less than 10 points per game. While the defensive unit of DLS Macroom isn’t too shabby (conceding 12 points per game to date), their forward division has looked lively on occasion, clocking up 8 goals and 45 points (an average of over 17 points per game). As in the title of the 2003 Jack Nicholson movie – “Something’s Gotta Give” and Saturday’s final will provide the answers.

In the semi-finals, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne recorded a 1-13 to 1-7 victory over St. Brendan’s Killarney though the game was in doubt until a late penalty goal by Seán Ó Bambaire. DLS Macroom had a tougher semi-final, requiring extra time before dispatching of St Fachtnas Skibbereen by 1-9 to 1-7. Along with their Kerry opposition, the DLS Macroom school has been the most consistent team in this competition, qualifying for the semi-final in each of the last four seasons. The fact that Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne have defeated DLS Macroom in each of the previous three seasons (twice in the semi-final and in the 2012 final) only adds extra incentive (if it were needed) to the Cork school to go one better on this occasion.

Throw-in is at 2:00pm and Richard Moloney of Limerick has been entrusted with the whistle for the day – good luck to Richard, his officials and both teams for what promises to be a memorable day in the sunny South-West.
