Tipperary earned a vital Allianz NHL with victory over Galway at Pearse Stadium on a scoreline of 4-22 to 1-20. Eamonn O’Shea’s Tipperary delivered a polished opening period display departing 2-13 to 1-09 ahead at the break. A third minute goal from a Brendan Maher sideline cut was followed by a delightful Shane Bourke strike on 18 minutes. Joe Canning replied with a goal from a 20 metre free five minutes later. Tipp struck a third in the 53rd minute when John O’Dwyer, who scored 1-06 from play, bagged and a wonder goal from Lar Corbett on 68 sealed the deal.

With Corbett splendid at centre forward Tipperary tormented and completely outclassed Galway in the opening period. The Tribesmen were in considerable distress as Eamonn O’Shea’s outfit hurled impressively seizing the initiative. A third minute goal from a Brendan Maher sideline gave Tipp an encouraging start and they were far too nifty for the locals. Corbett pulled the strings, crafting and taking chances, as Tipp claimed a second goal in the 18th minute. It was manufactured by a cute Corbett pass which allowed Shane Bourke to rattle the Galway net.

Under serious duress, Galway inevitably looked to Joe Canning for inspiration and the gifted Portumna marksman gave them a drop of hope when grabbing a 23rd minute goal from a free. Still when the interval rolled around, Tipp departed protecting a significant advantage and Galway needed to improve. After the restart Canning’s accuracy from frees and play kept Galway in touch, but Tipp were never too perturbed. A third Tipp goal was scored in the 53rd minute when the excellent O’Dwyer bundled the sliotar over the line following a Fergal Flannery save from Seamus Callanan.

In the closing stages Corbett, who was back to his best, scorched through the heart of the Galway defence to decorate the triumph with a glorious goal. It was another worrying loss for Galway, who are now under real pressure in the competition, but for Tipperary this was a notable achievement. Confidence is returning and the stylish manner of this dynamic display augurs well for the Premier County.
