Evans will follow Premier board’s lead on payments

TIPPERARY boss John Evans has vowed to abide by the county board’s stance on management payments. Two years ago, Croke Park top brass shot down moves to install Evans as Director of Football in Tipperary, which would have been an officially paid position. The Kerry native nevertheless remained in charge of the Premier County’s seniors and is also involved in the coaching of various underage teams. But despite such a heavy workload, Evans receives no official remuneration for his efforts. Following the release of Duffy’s document, Tipperary chairman Sean Nugent voiced strong opposition to any moves to pay managers. And Evans said: “I’ve made no comment on it. Whatever the Tipperary county board decide, that’s what I go under. If that’s not payment to managers, then so be it. I’m under the umbrella of the Tipperary county board. My term is supposed to finish with them this year and we’ll see where we go from there.”
Evans, meanwhile, is looking forward to the visit of Cork to Clonmel for Sunday’s McGrath Cup decider after an impressive 1-15 to 0-10 victory against an under-strength University College Cork outfit yesterday. Barry Grogan took his tally to 4-12 from three matches with a haul of 1-5 yesterday, including a 56th minute goal that ended UCC’s resistance as Tipp moved 1-13 to 0-9 clear. But it was UCC, with the aid of the breeze in the first half, who opened much the brighter in what was a disappointing contest overall, not helped by the amount of frees blown by referee Maurice Condon. Gavin O’Grady showed some lovely touches at corner-forward for UCC but the students were flat overall.
The first half yielded just five points from play as the sides went in level at 0-7 apiece, with Tipp recovering well after falling 0-4 to 0-1 behind by the 11th minute. After hitting the front for the first time in the game, via a Grogan 45 in the 43rd minute, Tipp kicked on and held the lead from there until the finish. Hugh Coghlan shone for the hosts in the second half, scoring three points before arrowing a superb crossfield ball to Grogan for a goal. Evans added: “It’s good preparation so early in the year. There is no substitute for games. Today was another step forward, we played a lot better than we did in the previous two Sundays.”

McGrath Cup Senior Football – Odds and Ends
76 players have scored in the 7 matches to date in 2012 McGrath Senior Football competition to date with Tipperary’s Barry Grogan top of the charts with 3-7.
Since the Third Level Colleges were allowed to take part in the McGrath Cup competition in 2005, only the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and UCC have qualified for the final. CIT lost the 2005 Final to Limerick by 2-10 to 1-3 while UCC lost to Kerry by 1-11 to 0-9 in the 2010 Final.
The record of the Third Level Colleges in the McGrath Cup since entering in 2005 (including the 2012 preliminary round) is Won 21, Lost 42. No College team won a game in 2011.
Clare have contested 6 Finals since 2000, winning the title in 2000, 2002 and 2008.
Waterford won the first McGrath Cup title in 1981, captained by Michael Coffey. This is their only McGrath Cup title to date.
From 2000 through 2012 to date, 91 matches were played in the McGrath Cup. Limerick have won the most games in this period, a total of 15 against 9 defeats. Clare also have 15 victories since 2000 while Cork recorded 14 victories during 5 campaigns.
Since 2000, Kerry have taken part in the McGrath Cup on 4 occasions (2005, 2006, 2010 and 2011), losing just twice in 13 matches (to Tipperary in the 2005 Quarter-Final and to Cork in the 2006 Final).
The Waterford Institute of Technology have yet to win a McGrath Cup match in their 8 years taking part in the competition.
